The last time I saw Sunderland get seven was against Oxford United under Peter Reid in 1998. Two apiece for Bridges, Dichio and Rae and one from Mickey Gray.
Well, the Reserves did it again today, whacking seven past Scunthorpe, as in the Oxford game without reply.
And look at the scoresheet: James McClean (19, 34); Ji Dong-won (50, 60) and another hat-trick for Ryan Noble (82, 84, 86), who had started the game on the bench.
I wonder whether any of them will figure at Molyneux on Sunder, and under whose command.
The squad (also including Gardner and Vaughan) was: Carson, B Wilson, Laing, Reed, Bagnall, Liddle, Gardner, Bramble, Kilgallon, Egan, Meyler, Vaughan, Dong-won, Cook, McClean, Ryan Noble.
Sadly, the goal spree was not witnessed by ordinary supporters. The rout of Oxford (who had a shedload of first-half corners if I remember correctly) was seen by 34,000+. Today’s Central League Cup game was at the Academy of Light and therefore behind closed doors.
