Sixer’s Sevens: Sunderland 3 Tottenham Hotspur 1 Trevor Francis 0

NEWsevens copy

So the new season, or the bit before it starts, carried on as the old one ended, with a game against Spurs. There, the similarities faded to nothing. We must not get carried away but the 3-1 win – after dignified defeat in last season’s final game in which our frailties were nevertheless there to be seen – offered mighty encouragement that the tide may be about to turn. It was no fluke; if anything the result ought to have been more emphatic. And how chuffed we all were that Trevor Francis’s pre-match babbling – PDC doesn’t know if his new men are any good, it’ll be more of the same next season, etc – were made to look so comprehensively moronic.

Salut! Sunderland’s own star, Pete Sixsmith, now resumes his inimitable series of seven-word verdicts from the many games he gets to, or the few he watches from the other side of the world …

July 24 2013 Barclays Asia Trophy: SAFC 3 (1) Tottenham Hotspur 1 (1) Spurs comfortably despatched in rainy Hong Kong

And from Monsieur Salut’s ESPN assessment (http://espnfc.com/blog/_/name/sunderland/id/1826?cc=5739#):

Sunderland supporters must be excused for taking particular delight in an early smattering of egg on face for Trevor Francis, whose pre-match comments as a television pundit included the spectacularly absurd gems that PDC did not know whether or not his new recruits could play and that the coming season would be much the same as the last one with anything above the relegation area a bonus. May he live to eat his words as Sunderland storm to a top-eight finish.

  1. We frequently play a side that looks C-minus. Leave us to take pleasure in winning the sort of game we normally lose

  2. Do you think that Trevor Francis might be an old pal of MON? Amazin how so many ‘experts’ where surprised at his sacking as though we were a top half side – do any ‘experts’ watch games anymore?

Also – nice to see Huddlestone’s influence in our first goal. I wasn’t aware that signing had gone through as yet.

Good signs today. Long way to go.

Personally I am feeling positive about the upcoming season, and looking forward to a slightly more interesting test against Man City on Saturday. That certainly wasn’t Spurs’s best side – but we too were missing our star striker and specialist full backs were we not?

  3. It should have been more emphtic against the Spurs ‘C’ side!! God if that team even starts against Hartlepool in the League cup I would be sick. Enjoy the win.
