Le Parole di Paolo: SAFC 4 MK Dons 2 – papering over the cracks?

Jake's Italian job

Malcolm Dawson writes; There I was stuck in Lytham St Annes, supposedly helping with the running of a Bridge holiday, with one headphone tuned into Radio Newcastle and the SAFC text commentary on the screen of my laptop. Every now and then I had to get up and do some work and as is usually the case, whenever I had to leave the laptop a goal went in. At 0-2 I feared the worst as did the other Sunderland supporter in the room who was struggling with a difficult 4 Heart contract. When I returned to the computer I saw we had pulled one back but hope was still greater than expectation. Then I was called away again and on my return we had taken the lead. The Adam Johnson goal was the only one of the six I actually heard. Relief! Gary Bennett hadn’t sounded too enthused about the first 80 minutes and in his e-mail to M Salut neither was PDC. We won but Paolo knows we are not the finished article …

Dear Colin,

We can be happy with the win; when you come back like we did it’s something special – it’s not very often you score four goals in 13 minutes; that was special.

We made the fans and the club happy and ourselves in some way, but I have to be strict on this because I did not enjoy the first 75 minutes.

If we only focus on the last 15 minutes then we are never going to improve. It is my job to keep everybody’s feet on the ground because otherwise it will be difficult.

My team are still a work in progress.

What we can take from this game is heart and pride, the team showed great desire and ambition and they never gave up.

It was an incredible cup game.

All the best,

Paolo Di Canio
