Ha’way our new Greek Lad.

On the cards all week, Sunderland have officially announced the signing of Charalampos (Charis) Mavrias, a Greek international, from Panathinaikos. The club says it’s for one of those tedious undisclosed fees; the Sunderland Echo‘s Graeme Anderson mentions a £1.5m down payment increasing by £1m with add-ons and the club can blame no one but themselves if that’s wrong. Fans are entitled to know.

PDC told Graeme before the deal was completed: “Until a player signs, I would prefer not to say too much about them. But what do I know about Mavrias? I know him, I know that he is a very good prospect, I know that he’s a very exciting player.”

The lad is only 19 and has agreed a three-year deal.

Over to safc.com: “The Greek midfielder came through the Athens side’s academy. He made his club debut in the UEFA Champions League as a 16-year-old in 2010, becoming the second youngest player (behind Celestine Babayaro) ever to play in the competition. [He] made 59 domestic and 11 European appearances for the Greek side, scoring six goals.

“He has also made two appearances for the Greek national side, as well as being capped at U17, U19 and U21 level.”

Come in number 35 – his squad number – your time is now. Welcome to Wearside, Mauvrias, and let’s hope your career goes from strength to strength.
