A chance for Sunderland fans to have their say on naming the Stadium of Light stands

We’ve chosen one of Jake’s generic Salut! Sunderland images as this is a democratic effort

Monsieur Salut writes: we’re all hoping the football from Jack Ross’s new-look Sunderland side will generate an electric atmosphere for today’s opening game against Charlton Athletic. But would you feel better if you were sitting in a stand named after a SAFC hero rather than the geographically sound but dull East, West, North and South? Have your say here …
[polldaddy poll=10070350]

If you saw the item at Salut! Sunderland when the poll was first mentioned here, you will know that we restricted the choice to seven former SAFC players, plus Bradley Lowery, still dear to our hearts, and Bob Stokoe, twice our manager (no one needs reminding of what happened during his first spell in charge).

Our associate editor, John McCormick, invited other nomination in the Comments sections. Readers came up with several other names, from Niall Quinn and SuperKev to Bob Murray and Peter Reid, while there was also a vote for restoring the Roker and Fulwell ends.

So for this re-run of the poll, we will allow additional choices. To avoid the sort of contamination we experienced with the promotion poll, we will keep the format as one choice only. Results will be concealed until the number of votes cast reaches a respectable level.

Click this marvellous old shot to take you back not only to the days of Roker Park – but also our home page and all the build-up to SAFC vs Charlton. 1. I honestly believe that Bob Murray should have a stand named after him. After all he should be recognised for creating the infrastructure we have at the club today. Doesn’t matter what professional footballer visits the facilities they all comment upon the world class facilities we enjoy. Be it the Academy, stadium, community hub. Bob Murray has also strong connection with the city and university. A true Wearside man.
