A win at last: the Wigan game in quotes

Sunday’s a day of rest, especially after you’ve won for the first time since Jan 22. Pete Sixsmith‘s analysis will appear tomorrow. Please feel free to add your own quotes to these …

Steve Bruce:

“I have to say a big thank you to the supporters. They were magnificent and played their part from the first whistle to the last.”

Eric Black (assistant manager):

“It was a [massive win]. There was obviously a sense of relief around the stadium, which was evident. It was a fabulous win, unfortunately a long time coming. I think all credit should go to the players under extremely difficult circumstances, we had to change the team three times. We went a goal down and it took a bit of resolve to come back and they [the players] deserve an enormous amount of credit for it. ”

Jordan Henderson

“Today was a massive game for us and we showed a lot of character to come from 1-0 down to win 4-2. All the lads are looking forward to next week’s game already and hopefully we can kick on from here.”

Michael Turner

“We try our hardest every week but it hadn’t been going right for us. We’ve all been fighting, we train hard and go into every game with a good attitude. Individually we have looked at ourselves to see what we could do better and today we did a great job.”

Bruce, on Sessegnon

“Stéphane is a terrific little player. It’s been difficult for him and we’d love to be just introducing him now, but unfortunately we haven’t been able to do that. You could see his ability in abundance today and he showed a lot of bottle to step up and take the penalty.”

Mick, at Blackcats

… it seems the only way to get our midfield players scoring is to remove all strikers from the pitch. It was remarkable how we played the ball on the ground and ran into dangerous positions when there was nobody to hump the high ball to. We waited until Gyan was off the pitch before delivering the kind of service he’s been wanting. Henderson made more dangerous runs in 20 mins than he has all season. And I found it unbelievable that we’d have a young striker on the bench away at Birmingham, but not at home to Wigan – who I have to say were the worst Premiership team I’ve seen in years.

Ols at Blackcats

I hope success for the young’ins doesn’t doesn’t detract from the atrocious situation of having no fit first team strikers, but I don’t think he has much to lose. I couldn’t bear Muntari and Richardson up front. Put Noble in, and if it doesn’t work, haul him off after 50 minutes and play 2-8-0, not much different from Bruce’s favoured 2-7-1 formation.

Elmohamady’s Sunderland beat Wigan to end winless run

Bruce on Bardsley (stretchered off after an aerial collision with Onuaha):

“Phil is up and about – he’s got a thick head anyway.”

  1. I have to admit I agree with Mick. Although deeply saddened by the Gyan injury, it was the first time in months the ball stayed on the ground. Fast passing and a few sprints equalled 4 goals.. and it could have been 5, Wigan looked all over the place.
I tend to believe this “hoof the ball in the box” kind of play is probably a sign of stress and anxiety rather than an actual tactic (if it’s a tactic something is really wrong – we’re probably the smallest team in the league as far as height is concerned). It proves that long ball should be banned in the SOL and that Steed and Sess can be in the same starting eleven, the opposition didn’t know where it was coming from, lovely dribbling and technique.
Anyway, I ‘m realy happy cause i’m in Sunderland for a fortnight and got the chance to watch a crucial and convincing win. Keep the faith
