As the Duke of Wellington allegedly said  two hundred years ago, they might not frighten the enemy but, my God, they frighten me. And it was a bit scary was it not? Like Waterloo, today’s battle was very much a close run thing. But despite the scares created by Pant’s missed clearance and O’Shea’s injury, not to mention a Cattermole booking, we got there and we’re still in the mix.

The gaffer chooses to allude to all of this only in passing as he sends Colin, and perhaps a couple of others, his verdict on a match we couldn’t afford to lose.

Dear Colin,

It was a great performance, we knew had to win today and it’s a much-needed three points.

It was a real team performance, not just the 11 players but everyone involved. Everyone gave so much and worked so hard.

The defence were outstanding; they were so solid today.

The team showed great resilience and worked their socks off to get a result and you could feel the crowd right behind us.

There was a great commitment from the players and it paid off as we got the three points.

[On the penalties] the first one is always easier to take than the second, there’s much more pressure, but he {Jordi Gomez] did well and was very confident when he stepped up.

We worked so hard today and didn’t really give Southampton many chances, I think it was a well-deserved win for us, everyone was brilliant.

Thanks for your support,

Dick Advocaat

Should we start sounding more optimistic?
