Now this really would be an exciting piece of transfer news.

No one at Salut! Sunderland wants to tempt fate, jump the gun, speak out of turn, count chickens or live up to a million other cliches.

But if reports are correct, the Netherlands international Jeremain Lens, an attacking midfielder with pace who can also play as second striker, is either having a medical at the Stadium of Light today or is in talks with the club.

Another report, from the Netherlands, has him denying the talk of a medical but agreeing that the prospect of playing for Advocaat is attractive (as is that of leaving the turmoil of Urkaine).

“Now seems like a great opportunity to make the switch… I do not feel unsafe, but since the situation is not resolved, it seems to me and my family it’s best that I make the move to England,” Lens is quoted as saying. “We [he and Advocaat] have previously worked well together at AZ and PSV. We know each other, that’s ideal.”

If the deal goes through – ESPNFC speculates at a fee of £9m – the Dynamo Kiev player would be an important new signing by Dick Advocaat.

Look him up at Wikipedia – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeremain_Lens

ESPNFC says Lens “came through the ranks at Alkmaar before moving to Eindhoven in 2010 and scored 34 goals in 96 Eredivisie appearances” before joining Kiev in 2013.

The only down side is that I will have to be on high alert for typos by Salut! Sunderland writers for two Sunderland strikers, not just one. Just as everyone became acquainted with it being Connor Wickham – despite possible variations – and Steven not Stephen Fletcher, along came Jermain Defoe.

A lot of people still insist on adding a final e.

And if I were to tell them Jeremain is an anagram of the misspelling of Defoe’s first name, they’d go on doing it and probably call Lens Jermaine, too.

Now, as we await firm news (feel free to add it below if you come across something), let us see what Jeremain can do, often in red and white stripes …

  1. This looks like a great player. Exciting to know that he is an attacking midfielder with potential of creating more for a lackluster team going forward. FIngers crossed here SAFC.

  2. I’ve just shown my nearest the above videos of Lens’ goal scoring skills. “There’s no way HE’LL be coming to Sunderland” was her comment.

  3. Seen him often in a PSV shirt, a good signing, pacy, experienced and he can play out wide or in the centre. Not bad.
