Au revoir Jordan Pickford, Everton-bound. As good as we’ve had since Monty

Jake: ‘Jordan Pickford: thanks and good luck’

Monsieur Salut‘s immediate thoughts on news that Jordan Pickford is following Bournemouth-bound Jermain Defoe out of the SoL door …

To no great surprise and, I am sure, to very little misplaced Mackem anger, Jordan Pickford is all but confirmed as an Everton player.

Sky Sports News is not always spot-on, but we can probably believe the tale that SAFC has agreed a fee totalling £30m, which includes a number of add-ons but guarantees Sunderland £25m.

Sky says: “Pickford, who played 32 times for the Black Cats last season, is currently on international duty in Poland with England for the U21s European Championships and will undergo a medical upon his return.”

First things first. Salut! Sunderland salutes the lad from the south-west corner of the Stadium of Light who, like the other Jordan to swap the Wear for the Mersey, is undoubtedly a fan for life. He has been a joy to watch, his shop-stopping abilities and usually wonderful distribution suggesting a long-term future at England’s No 1.

And there is not a bone in Monsieur Salut’s body that would break or tremble at the thought of such a great prospect leaving his beloved club, our beloved club, because professional ambition rightly takes priority.

The fee is high but not excessive in the modern context. We wish Jordan well as he progresses his career. Pete Sixsmith will write more fully in due course ….
