Salut Guests:talk of the Tyne Wear derby – Gatesy and Bezza will

Malcolm Dawson writes…….we do not normally do free adverts or plugs but those of you who live within spitting distance of the Spanish City may be interested in what follows. Of course I’m not suggesting that anyone literally discharges phlegm in the Bay area it’s just a manner of speaking you understand. Jake our resident illustrator, resides in Spain but we are not talking Toledo or Sevilla here – rather that famous seaside resort just to the north of Tynemouth, immortalised in song by Mark Knopfler “in the tunnel of love………….when we were kids”.

Peter Mann is a Mag but don’t hold that against him. He did the Newca5tle WAY a couple of years back. Read it here: Peter Mann BSc – The Doc of the Bay

Peter has asked us to publicise an event that should be of interest to those of a red and white persuasion as well as our friends from the dark side of the Wear/Tyne divide. So here it is in his own words…..

42nd Street to host Gates & Beresford

In the aftermath of yet another Tyne-Wear derby the 42ND Street Bar in Whitley Bay are to play host to a derby of a different sort as legends Eric Gates (Sunderland) and John Beresford (Newcastle) talk of their respective careers.

Hosted by Relentless Promotions, bar manager, Gaz Harding, himself a Sunderland fan, can’t wait for the event and is sure that it will not only prove to be an instant success but also the first of many. He said: “This is the first we’ll have done and we’ve been speaking about it with Danny Cox (of Relentless Promotions) for about a year now so it’s time we did something about it. We had been looking at new concepts and there’s been nothing of this sort in the area so why not, especially when you look at the calibre of the two players.”

Both former England internationals ‘Gatesy’ appeared for Sunderland in the late 80’s making near 200 appearances for the Black Cats winning the old Third Division title in 1988. Meanwhile ‘Bez’ was a stalwart of Kevin Keegan’s Entertainers during the 90’s winning the old First Division title in 1993 and being runner-up in the Premier League and FA Cup.

“We’ve got a good Sunderland contingent here in the Bay so the fact that we have one from each side of the divide will go do down well,” Harding continued. We’re definitely hoping that Bez talks about the Keegan era and, as a SAFC fan then Gatesy will tell it how it is and maybe give insight into the current predicaments across the region.”

With good accessibility to the bar itself, and plenty of specialist drinks available to cater every need including Belgian and American flavours, the night will have plenty to whet the appetite.

“We have around a hundred tickets for the night and selling those will help make it a good night all round.”

Tickets for ‘An Evening with a Newcastle United and a Sunderland Legend: John Beresford and Eric Gates’ on Wednesday 29 April are on sale from the 42nd Street Bar, Whitley Bay priced at £9.50 for a pie and pea supper. Ticket Hotline is 07814717161.
