Cross words and Sunderland

ROKERDAVE GOT IT – LIKE SALUT! SUNDERLAND – BY ACCIDENT. SEE COMMENTS ….

Mark Walton at the Blackcats list couldn’t resist it and nor could I.

Five across in today’s Independent crossword: Steep drop in dodgy videos in Sunderland (4,4).

Mark has never previously seen Sunderland mentioned in a cryptic crossword clue. The renown of the old bomber aircraft suggests it must have been, probably many times.

But that doesn’t deal with the obvious question. Correct answer anyone? It is not difficult. Think anagrams.

  1. Not a misroute at all. An altogether routine cryptic clue. A little hypersensitivity, perhaps, on the part of anyone seeing a slight agains Sunderland?

  2. Rokerdave: you made the same mistake as me. I looked for the anagram, found it – I decided -with videos in and came up, as you did ,with nose dive.

But as Mark has pointed out elsewhere, the anagram is videos and has then to be enclosed within NE (ie Sunderland, geographically).

Great minds, but getting there by a misroute!

  3. The crossword anagram was not difficult to solve, but at the risk of being accused of being thick, I can’t see the connection with Sunderland?

VIDEOS IN = NOSE DIVE = STEEP DROP
