Le parole di Paolo: Fulham display lacked ferocity

In his post match e-mail to M Salut, PDC refuses to follow the Bruce/O’Neill approach in picking out the positives from defeat. Instead he highlights the obvious, that this is a new team playing together for the first time but also calls for more fire from his team.

Dear Colin,

I’ve said before that I prefer to play well and lose a game – I say this because I try to think about the future and look at things in a positive way, but now after losing maybe I think a little bit differently.

It’s disappointing, for 80 minutes we were in Fulham’s half and the only corner that they had has cost us the game.

We left a man free at the post and gave away a silly goal.

Our new players need to learn quickly, this is just the opening day but there’s no time to spare in the Barclays Premier League.

I need to see more ferocity from my players, the way we played satisfied me as there was only one team in the game.

The one thing that was missing from our performance was a goal and that is the main thing – you need to score to get maximum points or sometimes to draw.

Their goal hurt us and for the rest of the game we looked like a team of new players.

Fulham are an experienced side with players that have been together for many years.

We need to adjust a few things but we are a team capable of doing that.

All the best,

Paolo Di Canio

  1. Call me old fashioned but a full-back on the post makes the goal smaller and easier to defend. It was a poor goal and totally out of context with the match but we need to score to win. Attacking teams will always concede they just need to score more than the opposition to win, MON knew this and decided to defend with the line up he had. A change of mindset will always bring disappointment but in the long run is the best solution.

    • You are correct about the posts Keith, if you watch the goal again you’ll see a defender on the near post but not the far, Your keeper should be the man to make sure of this, no way would that header have gone in.

  2. yeah Ill give him the new side excuse so far…we played better than Fulham but the snatch and grab goal did deflate our very confident start…not felt a buzz around the SOL like that in a while.

You can see what he wants to do…attack and that is refreshing in itself,my worry is a more attacking team than Fulham will cause us serious problems at the back. That said we should be good enough this year if the confidence stays.
