Liverpool 1-2 Sunderland: why can’t our men be more like our women?

The question is posed
the other way round by Professor Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady. “Women are irrational, that’s all there is to that,” he sings. “Their heads are full of cotton, hay, and rags! They’re nothing but exasperating, irritating, vacillating, calculating, agitating. Maddening and infuriating hags! Why can’t a woman be more like a man?”

But Henry wasn’t to know how bad our men would be, and how good the Lasses are.

So Salut! Sunderland urges Dick Advocaat to use this remarkable Women’s Super League 1 debut by Sunderland Ladies, against the reigning champions no less, to impress upon his male squad just what is meant by passion, pride and a winning spirit. Preferably getting the message through in time for the Wear-Tyne derby.

Both safc.com and the Sunderland Echo gave generous coverage to the ladies’ dream start to life at the very top.

From the club site:

‘A first-half header from Beth Mead and a penalty from debutant Brooke Chaplen gave Sunderland a comfortable lead before Satara Murray pulled a goal back for the hosts from a corner.

The win, in new boss Carlton Fairweather’s first game in charge, will give his side a huge boost as they start their first season in England’s top flight.’

…Though Liverpool pressed, Sunderland nearly scored a third when Sophie Williams hit a powerful drive just over from the edge of the box. And the visitors were able to hold on to earn themselves a stunning start to their maiden campaign in the top flight.

And from the Echo:

‘Sunderland Ladies were in Wunderland after winning 2-1 at reigning champions Liverpool.

The home side started as big favourites at the Halton Stadium but a Beth Mead-inspired Lady Black Cats scored a goal in each half to take all three points.’

Salut! Sunderland
has been and remains a staunch supporter of the Lasses and a great admirer of what they have achieved. Keep it up and please let some of your glory rub off on the Lads.

  1. All the more impressive ,as one commentator stated the jump from WPL 2 to WPL 1 is the male equivalent of jumping from division 1 to the Premier . Well done , keep it up !
