We’ve been this way so many times. The big game on the outcome of which rests so much. And it is fair to say the many Sunderlands of our collective support have not always been great at delivering the goods on such occasions.
This time, there must be no false move. We have to beat Crystal Palace if we are to give that essential boost to the mini-revival staged under Gus Poyet.
Of course we can lose and still stay up; the mathematics suggest this season’s relegation issues will not be fully resolved before the last couple of games. But on any analysis, a draw would be desperately disappointing and defeat would frankly make survival start to look beyond us.
All three of Sunderland’s home wins in the league have been achieved under Gus Poyet since he took over what seemed, in October, a lost cause. Newcastle, Man City and Stoke. But Villa were allowed to steal three points, Hull brushed aside our 10 men and the visits of Chelsea and Spurs produced predictable away wins.
Over to you to guess the score. No prize, just for fun, Palace supporters are welcome to join in.
And in case you missed it, there’s a terrific Palace “Who are You?” – at

Here’s a flavour of what Mick had to say:
Q: Any thoughts on SAFC, the fans, the region?
I’ve always had a particular respect and affection for Sunderland. You’re a proper football club, in the same way that I regard Palace as a proper football club, which is to say a combination of history (yours more distinguished than ours); wildly fluctuating fortunes (ours fluctuating more wildly than yours); resolutely unfashionable; a loyal, not to say fanatical following; the sense that you don’t choose to support the club, but that you are chosen – branded – by virtue of geography, family tradition; the fact that following the club is not a pastime, but a desperate and irrational love.
