SAFC vs Fulham Guess the Score: a life-changing mug could be yours

A new season and a new series of Guess the Score competitions.

Sunderland take on Fulham in the knowledge that the home games that follow, right up to early December, are challenging to say the least: Arsenal, Liverpool, Man Utd, Newcastle United, Man City, Chelsea, Spurs.

Can we get it right in the opening game? If we can, it’ll give Paolo Di Canio’s new-look squad a great boost before tough but winnable away games at Southampton and Crystal Palace – not to mention a Capital One cup 2nd round home tie against Milton Keynes Dons.

Guess the score in Saturday’s opener and, if you are the first to get it right and post your prediction before kick off, Monsieur Salut will come up with a prize, probably a Salut! Sunderland mug. Fulham fans can enter, too, and a winner would receive a mug with suitably amended design.

The one shown was the first to be sold – to Rob Hutchinson – and contains his tea, which may well have gone down his throat or cold by now. The MoN mugs that followed are now somewhat out of date so future prizes will probably sport a new design reflecting the PDC era.

The classic design: 'Salut! Sunderland - a site better'

But I cannot promise
to stump up week after week for an incentive to enter. All will depend on the state, usually parlous, of the site’s finances.

It would be wonderful if we could find a sponsor. If we limit the prize to a mug, that means under £10 a time in return for a permanent ad on the home page of Salut! Sunderland.

If you know someone, a business with Sunderland or North-eastern links maybe or just friendly towards football, that might be up for this, a quick e-mail to salutsunderland@gmail.com would set the ball rolling.

Sample:

Q: Have eyebrows been raised among Fulham fans by reports linking you with players Paolo Di Canio doesn’t want, eg Phil Bardsley (now injured – ed) and Lee Cattermole?

A: Eyebrows have been raised and I think many like me want other potential players linked to Fulham. Keiran Richardson was a signing last year that I liked, but he was hurt a good amount of the season, and I hope he can be a solid contributor to Fulham this season at left back.

  1. 5-4 Home win.

As the side could be a totally unknown quantity for the first few matches, my tactic this season is to choose the most ridiculous score from the previous week in any of the top 4 English Leagues. It was a close call but I’ve gone for the Coventry v Bristol City result though Watford v Bournemouth also appealed.

  2. I managed to smash my prized “3 Badge” SAFC mug last week (they don’t bounce). So please send me a replacement of any design. 2-0.

  3. We need a good start this season, before the tough home games so I’m gonna say 3-0 to get the Lads off to a flyer

  4. Since I cannot allow myself to win, i can go for a daft prediction. 5-3 to the Lads, with Altidore getting three, Sess one and one own goal. All after we go 2-0 down.
