SA’s Essay: weathering the Swansea storm for a big three points

Malcolm Dawson writes……this was an eventful game to say the least. Six goals (one possibly offside, a debatable penalty, a sending off, a debatable disallowed goal, a goal disallowed after it took the linesman an age to raise his flag, a Jermaine Defoe hat trick! Enough questionable decisions to rile the South Wales press and give the MOTD pundits plenty to chew over. What did Big Sam make of it in his post match missive to M Salut and a few others? SWANSEA CITY 2-4 SUNDERLAND

Dear Colin,

We could have been three goals up inside the first 10 minutes and scored one.

Then they got the penalty where it looks like he’s kicked the floor. That lifted the crowd and made life extremely difficult for us. We had to weather the storm.

Swansea scoring immediately after the sending-off, on a breakaway, put us under enormous pressure at half-time.

Half-time for me was about the lads doing their jobs properly and pressing, a high press which is not something we usually do away from home. Playing against 10 men, we had to shut Swansea down in their own half every time they tried to play. That’s what worked for us in the end and the clinical Mr Defoe has won us another game.

We’re putting the myth to bed that Jermain can’t play up front on his own because he’s won us two games now.

There were big calls both ways but at the end of the day we played with the situation as it panned out to come back and win the game; that’s all we can do. We had our destiny in our own hands today and we’ve taken the opportunity.

It’s an enormous, enormous, enormous three points, which gives us a lot of encouragement and hope going forward.

I’m delighted for the fans; they deserve that result and can enjoy that long journey home now. I’m so pleased for them after all the fixture disruption – they still came in their numbers to cheer us on and it’s a great result for them.

Thanks for your support,

Sam Allardyce
