Sixer’s Sevens: Arsenal 0 Sunderland 0 – gritty northerners silence the Gunners

The new season started at the Emirates and Pete Sixsmith was there, as he is more or less every time Sunderland play, to offer his short, sharp verdict on the outcome. He follows this with his incomparable mix of humour, match report and travelogue that usually appears one or two days after each game. If for some reason Pete is not there – he refuses to pay extravagant ticket prices, for example, or Shildon FC have a better game in prospect – or if his instant assessment is delayed, a supersub may insert his or her version, preceded by an asterisk …

Essentially Pete’s mission is to captures the glory and shame, hope and despair, excitement and ennui of the Sunderland matchday experience. The full Sixer’s Sevens archive – see link below – sums up what all Sunderland supporters feel, from darkest gloom to sublime elation, in the words of one who is usually there …

  1. Sadley ifos is correct in the eyes of the media there are only 5 or 6 teams worth a mention. If a so called lower class team puts in a tacticaly sound combatative display agains a TOP team the likes of Le Tiss, Merson et al use their outstanding knowledge of the game and fail to spot it. Until the TV and radio sports shows give equal coverage to all the teams and employ so called experts that can do this, we will be saddled with the same old same old each week. Haway the Lads.

    • I believe the Lord Of The Pants has signed with SKY to provide analysis at their live games. He also said he would be in attendance yesterday. So maybe, just maybe, we will get a more favourable mention this season. Not that he’s biased…

  2. How did Saha look? A lack of supply and support hampered him, but some of his touches were a class apart from all that had gone before, until one or two of Arshavin’s late passes.
Interesting to note Sky’s (Le Tissier’s) failure to ackonwledge that our lack of possession/shots in the second half may not be an indicator of our season, but rather the fact that we were playing one of the alleged best teams in the premier league at their home ground.
Will Sky pundits ever give us the credit we deserve? I doubt it, given that every single ‘expert’ said we’d be beat by 2-3 goals!

  3. A decent start, given the circumstances. Sounds like a copybook game for Sunderland and one we might even have won. I look forward to hearing how Saha looked when he subbed for Sess.
