You don’t lose 6-2 by bad luck. Yes, we had some – two shots against the same post before Everton scored, a viable shout for a first-half pen – but this game was thrown away by defending as inept as you will see in the Premier or, dare I say, Ryhope Over 40s, League. After hauling ourselves back into the game, Defoe and Fletch cancelling out Everton’s two-goal lead and another chance going begging when we might have gone 3-2 up, we imploded. Every home attack seemed likely to result in a goal. Of course it will have entertained neutrals but we are not neutrals. Bring back boring football it stops attackers ripping our defence to shreds at will. Pete Sixsmith‘s options for his seven-word verdict tell their own story …

  1. Everton fan here, don’t despair lads, you looked good early on in the game with some promising attacking football, but your defence is pretty poor. If Sam can sort that out let’s hope you can get your act together and climb the table. Especially if it’s at the expense of the Deluded Ones from Skunkland.
    Good Luck.

  2. Sam got his tactics wrong. Should have stuck to 4 4 2, or even 4 5 1, especially when we got back to 2-2.

Our failure to address the main weakness in our squad, the defence, is costing us dear. I hope that Sam is able to get in three PL level defenders in January. We might just survive then, because there are other teams almost as bad as us.

  3. I had concerns when I saw the line up and the formation . These horror shows keep happening and they will do untill we sign better defenders . Whether we have enough to stop up at the minute is arguable but I can’t see Big Sam playing that formation again , we were porus .

  4. We looked ok at times but on the bus back to Lime St. I did a mental comparison of the teams. Everton were better in every position. They ran through our midfield at will

  5. Coates and Brown plus van Aanholt? Predictable. Back to the drawing board but today emphasizes just how important O’Shea still is. I just hope that we are within spitting distance come January and one silver lining, Sam has learned how friable the real Sunderland are.
