Sixer’s Sevens. For the record, Millwall exploit our defensive frailty

Jake: ‘it’s not always pretty’

Pete Sixsmith will soon be excused duty from Salut! Sunderland in order to carry out his traditional Santa tasks but before he goes he’s giving us enough to keep us occupied. There’s a look at Villa Park scheduled for Monday, a match report some time tomorrow, some thoughts about a probable manager later (and a book launch with former Sunderland stars present) this evening and he’s starting the ball rolling with an instant, seven-word reaction to today’s game at the Stadium of Light, a 2-2 draw against Millwall after a catalogue of goalkeeping errors on both sides that lumbered us with that rotten record as the team with the longest winless home run in history, It can only get better, Chris Coleman, can’t it? …

November 18 Sunderland 2 (1) Millwall 2 (2) An awful game compounded by comical goalkeeping

November 5 Middlesbrough 1 (1) Sunderland 0 (0) Bottom of the league and deservedly so.

October 31 Sunderland 3 (1) Bolton Wanderers 3 (3) Neither the result nor performance good enough

October 28 Sunderland 1 (1) Bristol City 2 (1) Hopeless and clueless. Add embarrassing to that.

October 21 Brentford 3 (1) Sunderland 3 (3) * Two in front yet lucky to survive

October 14 Sunderland (0) 1 Queens Park Rangers (1) 1 The elusive home win seems miles away

September 30 Preston North End (0) 2Sunderland (1) 2 * Seriously entertaining and well worth the point

September 26 Ipswich Town 5 (2) Sunderland (1) 2 Sunderland’s defending plummets to unheard of depths

September 23 Sunderland 1 (0) Cardiff City 2 (1) Undoubtedly the worst Sunderland team I’ve watched

September 20 League Cup 3rd Round: Everton (1) 3 Sunderland (0) 0 * Never looked like scoring, let alone winning

September 16 Hull City 1 (0) Sunderland 1 (1) Hung on but not a sparkling performance

September 12 Sunderland 0 (0) Nottingham Forest 1 (o) Some improvement but we lack any punch

September 9 Sunderland 1 (0) Sheffield United 2 (1) no tactics, appalling team selection,
total embarrassment

August 26 Barnsley 3 (2) Sunderland 0 (0) Alarm bells clanging after a dreadful performance

August 22 League Cup: Carlisle United (0) 1 Sunderland (1) 2 Classy finish by Gooch masks scrappy performance

August 19 SAFC 0 (0) Leeds United 2 (1) Weaknesses exposed by a solid Leeds team

August 16 Sheffield Wednesday (0) 1 Sunderland (1) 1 Looked tired in second half. Decent point

August 13 Norwich City 1 (0) Sunderland 3 (1) Very well organised and three cracking goals

August 8 League Cup: Bury 0 (0) Sunderland (0) 1 Hardly convincing but a win’s a win

August 4 2017 Sunderland (1) 1 Derby County (1) 1 Encouraging second half. Something to build on

  1. An awful game? First time I have disagreed with the superb Pete Sixsmith but I was there too and feel I should put another view. Whilst not a classic of footballing skills the entertainment AND the spirit shown by our players ought to be acknowledged. Last season I suffered many boring displays at SoL but this was in complete contrast and it was heartening to see goal threats from many in our our team and not just Defoe. The result and the consequent undesired record should not obliterate what was, in my opinion, a spirited performance and, in the second half particularly, an exciting spectacle. I would like to suggest that the absence of an exodus by our supporters backs up my view.

  2. James Talbot could be the man to dig us out of this horrendous goalkeeping situation. Failing that, I’m digging my gloves out…….

  3. In 1912 Sunderland goalkeeper, Walter Scott, was sacked for ‘palpable inefficiency’. Surely the same must be coming to Ruiter and, very soon, Steele. By the way, just how bad is Mika that he can’t even challenge the Chuckle Brothers.

    • What I’ve seen of Mika in the U23’s etc , he’s just as bad. Unless Coleman can sign a competent out of contract keeper to tide us over until January, the damage will be irreparable . What a disaster to sell Mannone, and who was responsible?
