I think phase 1 of Gus’s is now complete….we are a hard team to beat.Phase 2 , to start to win games should beginin the NewYear …..I hope .Let’s see who we bring in to see whether or not I am right.Pace ,creativity and an eye for goa is required.
The fact is that any team that defends in depth is hard to beat. You see it time and time again when teams from lower league’s play PL clubs.
In fact we were hard to beat under O’Neill, and IMO we are no better now.
The trick is to be both hard to beat, and to pose an attacking threat. I have seen absolutely no evidence that Poyet has a clue as to how to bring that about. His ” system ” depends on 8/9 players defending the last third of the pitch. Given that there is no pace in the side, where are goals going to come from?
IMO the system we play relies on goals coming form the midfield .So we need a young version of Lampard,Gerard or Toure ….goal scoring box to box midfielders ,which of course are hard to come by. Whilst our three or four central midfielders are hard working they are not prolific goal scorers. I would be interested to see what Giaccharini can do in terms of goals playing in behind Wickham or Fletcher.
Villa were there for the taking with 11 men, let alone 10. Despite hitting the post, Gomez was abysmal in the 2nd half. Unbelievably sloppy. Buckley came on and attempted to be even worse than Gomez. Rarely have I seen a footballer with less of a football brain than Buckley – gives the impression he hasn’t a clue about the very basics of the game. I like Jones’ attitude and Giachi looked sharp considering he’s been out for a while….two of the few bright spots.
No you’re not a miserabke git at all Drummer. Pathetic effort when you can’t beat a team that’s poor with 11 and then you have half the game against 10 men. Add to that another wonderful performance from Costel to make sure that we got a point.
There is no movement whatsoever in this team. I thought we were suffering from a lack of pace but it’s worse than that. Going forward it’s like watching girls play netball. Giaccy came on and provided some of what was lacking but he couldn’t do it all on his own. Very poor again.
Heart sunk a little when they had Delph sent off ,as the cliche rings true , its harder to score against ten men defending though we find it unusually hard to score against eleven . A decent away point again but I’m still a little dissapointed , miserable git arn’t I !
