Sixer’s Sevens: Ipswich Town 5 Sunderland 2. Run over by the tractor, boys

Jake: ‘it won’t always be pretty’

Long before the end of the latest home defeat, to Cardiff City on Saturday, Pete Sixsmith had reached the conclusion that he was watching the worst Sunderland team since he first started going to Roker Park in the 1960s. That was for his seven-word instant verdict; his considered appraisal of the game was more measured, but not much kinder. It didn’t stop him going to Ipswich.

From where he sent another bleak assessment.

September 26 Ipswich Town 5 (2) Sunderland (1) 2 Sunderland’s defending plummets to unheard of depths

September 23 Sunderland 1 (0) Cardiff City 2 (1) Undoubtedly the worst Sunderland team I’ve watched

September 20 League Cup 3rd Round: Everton (1) 3 Sunderland (0) 0 * Never looked like scoring, let alone winning

September 16 Hull City 1 (0) Sunderland 1 (1) Hung on but not a sparkling performance

September 16 Hull City 1 (0) Sunderland 1 (1) Hung on but not a sparkling performance

September 12 Sunderland 0 (0) Nottingham Forest 1 (o) Some improvement but we lack any punch

September 9 Sunderland 1 (0) Sheffield United 2 (1) no tactics, appalling team selection,
total embarrassment

August 26 Barnsley 3 (2) Sunderland 0 (0) Alarm bells clanging after a dreadful performance

August 22 League Cup: Carlisle United (0) 1 Sunderland (1) 2 Classy finish by Gooch masks scrappy performance

August 19 SAFC 0 (0) Leeds United 2 (1) Weaknesses exposed by a solid Leeds team

August 16 Sheffield Wednesday (0) 1 Sunderland (1) 1 Looked tired in second half. Decent point

August 13 Norwich City 1 (0) Sunderland 3 (1) Very well organised and three cracking goals

August 8 League Cup: Bury 0 (0) Sunderland (0) 1 Hardly convincing but a win’s a win

August 4 2017 Sunderland (1) 1 Derby County (1) 1 Encouraging second half. Something to build on

  1. We got rid of “dead wood”, but now we’re in big big trouble because replacements have no quality at all… Grayson has to do something or we’re going down

  2. To rub salt in the wounds, players we deemed not good enough are doing well in the Championship – Waghorn today, Murphy got his 6th of the season. And Alfie N’Dyaye got the winner for Wolves at the weekend.

  3. I’ve said it before – we are just an embarrassment. I’m not one who believes in hastily sacking managers, but one point from seven games is relagation form, and something needs to change. I accept that Grayson has had no money to spend but he has still brought in players he knows and he can’t get them playing. Seems to be a mini-Moyes , just cheaper versions of Pieinarr and Lescott.

  4. Our club is dying and the only man with the genuine power to save it won’t . I remember when Short took over from Sir Niall Quinn as chairman and assured us the club was in safe hands under his stewardship. That job seems to have been handed over to Bain with the remit of running it down , well it’s working, hope your pleased with yourselves . I doubt you even care , you certainly don’t understand….anything.

    • To be honest. All I expected this season was survival. It has been a horrid few weeks, but we have played all the top teams.
I feel we need Simon Grayson for around 2 seasons to clear the debt, and steady the club. Hopefully, then we can start the climb back up. But, it looks a massive leap from where we are now.
I would give Simon Grayson a chance for now, as we are not playing the lower placed teams. But, I am scared as to what happens to this team. I never predicted we would go back up, that was a non event. Even the Boro are struggling, and they are better placed to get back up than we are.

      • We’re in freefall Rob , probably the worst team in our history. Unless Grayson changes it around in the next game he should go . I’m well aware the problems go way deeper than him , but he obviously isn’t helping.
