Sixer’s Sevens: Liverpool 1 Sunderland 1

We are back. Pete Sixsmith captures the glory or shame, hope or despair, excitement or ennui of each Sunderland game, starting with today’s opener at Anfield. When, rarely, Pete is absent, a supersub does it for him and the seven-word verdict is preceded by an asterisk. Pete’s full analysis of the game will appear soon.

The full Sixer’s Sevens archive – see link below – encapsulates the matchday experiences, from darkest gloom to sublime elation, of a fan who is usually there …

  1. MOTD analysed the Liverpool ‘performance’ but hardly touched on the game. Noticed that they never showed Catts booking, but did show the challenge from Lucas Leiva that was worse…

Wasn’t a dirty game, though – just a little scrappy in places and a few ‘enthusiastic’ tackles. Space was at a premium when we pressed in midfield. Phil Dowd should’ve sent Kieran off having missed the handball (as did the entire media) and thus the rest of the first half was refereed by the Kop end.

Still don’t know what their free-kick was for, other than Suarez fancied a(nother) sit down.

Refs should occasionally book players when they give them free-kicks for the manner of sniper related collapse. They should also be prepared to give free kicks when a player IS impeded but is honest enough to stay on his feet.

Still, considering they’re a ‘top 4 ‘ side, I’m going to enjoy champions league football next year. 😉

  2. I don’t have a problem with all the cards shown as long as all the referees do the same thing. It will stop players crowding the ref and trying to influence the decision al la Man U. A shitty first half and we were only allowed to play in the 2nd by Liverpool. We need some height up front and desperately need a left full back !!!!

  3. MOTD should make it clear if there was a Suarez hand in there.
If Keiran could have gone, what about Carragher?
Despite those incidents, eight red cards! Not a dirty game in any way.

As the teams were announced, I felt surprised and disappointed that so few new signings were playing, but SB has obviously made the right decision in introducing them gradually. King Ken played all of his and it backfired.

Well done Jack C, Seb L, Catts, Dong-won and especially to Wes who was fantastic. A great performance by the lads today.

  4. Did I imagine Suarez blocking Richardson’s ball forward with his hands to get through for the penalty incident?

Did anyone see a foul for the FK for their goal?

We were never under threat and looked more likely to win it…I’m happy(ish) but would like fellow fans to clear up the above points to relieve me of this familiar sense of grievance at a dodgy ref.

Of course, if Richardson was deemed to have fouled Suarez (in spite of the sniper) than he SHOULD have seen red…

Sorry for the vent – thanks for the outlet. KTF
