After the rhetoric and posturing that resulted from a bit of mickey taking at the end of last season no doubt the supporters of Manchester United will be celebrating their revenge. We can expect more than a modicum of gloating and worse but to anyone coming on here to tell us “we told you so”, let me state that this result came as no surprise. That’s not to say we didn’t have hope, but it was in hope and not with expectation that we travelled to Old Trafford this afternoon.Pete Sixsmith‘s seven-word verdict gives the synopsis; come back for Sixer’s full assessment …

  1. Martin. You could have posted almost the same comments about the game against Norwich. No disrespect to the Canaries, but they are not the best team in the country. It’s not about one game or two games or even three that people are disgruntled about, it’s twenty three and counting. We are complete and utter garbage.

    William C is absolutely correct. I saw the whole game live and it could have been 4 or 5 in the first 15 minutes. Rooney could have been on a hat trick after the same period had he not been wasteful. Same mistakes from the same players week in and week out and the same results.

  2. We lost 3-1 away to the best team in the country. Three out of 4 of our first choice defence were out injured, as was our captain. Even at three nil down we kept going, scored a goal and could easily have had one or two more. It’s no disgrace. have a bit of perspective please.

    • Martin, I try to be objective. I watched the highlights that evening on MOTD, and Manchester Utd cut us to pieces in the first half. Phil Brown [ on radio commentary ] said that SAFC would have to sort out their defence ” to avoid a cricket score “.

      Everyone has injuries. That is why there is a squad system. These players are paid tens of thousands each week, and many of them are internationals.

      A few days ago, Bradford City, with a team that cost £7.500 beat a full strength Arsenal side. How? By being organised, and by concentrating for 90 minutes.

      I agree we did better in the second half. We say that nearly every week. How does the manager explain that?

    You must have been on Mars for the Norwich game Ian. In all seriousness, this is so ridiculous and so inept. It’s becoming a continual problem and something needs to be done about this, Bring in a sports psychologist to deal with this, although I suspect that this has as much to do with the oppostion letting us play when they feel that they game is won.

    Unacceptable dross is what we’ve had served up all season and for much of last. I agree completely about Wickham.

    • I listened to it on radio, and if the commentary was accurate we could have been 4 or 5 down by half time. I think that we were very fortunate that Man Utd took their foot off the pedal. It sounds as if it could have been extremely embarrassing.

  4. We should have just gave them the three points and saved the time and trouble of the travelling fans.
    I expected to lose. But I didn’t expect us not to start until half time.
    Whatever MON says at half time, he should say before the game starts.
    We’ve got to start games with intent and energy otherwise we’ll struggle.
    I would play Wickham more. I think he can be a real handful.
