Sixer’s Sevens: Rochdale undone by a Majastic display

Max Stryjek saved a penalty, Danny Graham and Steven Fletcher both scored and John O’Shea was sent off. Does it matter? Not at all. None of them were at the Stadium of Light.

Pete Sixsmith was, however, and his seven word text, sent as the whistle blew, sets the scene for a report that people will really want to read tomorrow.

Sept 22 Sunderland 4 (3) Rochdale 1 (0) Fifteen minute purple patch wrapped this up

Sept 15 Burton Albion  2 (2) Sunderland 1 (o) Weaknesses horribly exposed in a deserved defeat

Sept 8 Sunderland 1 (1) Fleetwood Town 1 (1) Huffed and puffed against very difficult opponents

Sept 4 Sunderland 0 (0) [4]  Stoke City U21s 0 (0) [2]  *Decent workout for young guns and recoverees

Sept 8 Sunderland A (a) Fleetwood Town B (b)

Sept 1 Sunderland 1 (0) Oxford United 1 (1 ) Poor first half, dug in well second

Aug 11 Luton Town (0) 1 Sunderland (1) 1 Played well in patches against solid opposition

  1. A fifth of the way through the season. 18 pts after 9 games and a +10 goal difference. Whilst accepting the limitations of extrapolation if we keep it up we’ll have 92 points and a GD in the 40s…we’ll be there or thereabouts for automatic promotion….and all of this before we unleash Duncan Watmore on the poor souls in the 3rd Division….I know we shouldn’t count chickens cliche cliche but surely after all the years of gloom we’re entitled to some hope

  2. Decent performance from everyone today though despite the scoreline it wasn’t all one way.

That said, Baldwin was in control of the ball before he was pushed off it when they scored. Should’ve been a free kick imo. They should also have had a man sent off for an elbow on Gooch.

No easy games in this division and a good three points.

    What did you think Brian?
