Pete Sixsmith recognised this was a game that could have gone either way, with decent half-chances at either end and both SAFC and West Ham enjoying periods in control. His seven-word verdict reflects that view of a game that vindicated Gus Poyet’s complaint last week that Sunderland lack cutting edge up front. Jozy Atidore’s comical slip from Seb Larsson’s great pull back, in the last act of the first half, will be remembered by many but he was not alone in failing to look much like scoring in open play …

I’d put Vergini on up front from the start, rather than have to suffer the torment of watching Altidore do what he does again.
You’re right Rob. Even if he is playing against third rate opposition in the international arena, you would think that he would ever so occasionally be able to use that experience get a shot or a header on target at a higher level. The mind boggling thing is that given his woeful performances and record, is that he is starting. He shouldn’t be even considered. It’s hard to comprehend. There must be countless centre forwards playing for pub teams and Sunday league etc that would out perform this joker. He’s shocking and the only thing that’s more shocking is Poyet’s ludicrous perseverance with him.
I do not understand how Altidore scored so many in Holland, gets a decent rate for the USA, yet is so bad in the Premier League.
Oh well, we are stuck with him for now, at least Wickham will be around for some time. I’d play Connor as our main striker, for sure, and make Altidore the support striker, if he plays.
I always rated Lee Cattermole, and when he is on song so are the team.
Oh dear, oh dear Dumbledore. He joined in the pantomime season perhaps a tad early. It would be hilarious if he were doing this for somebody other than us. 6.5 million for him. I wouldn’t have spent the Mags money on him.
It wasn’t a slip. He suddenly appeared as if he was wearing diver’s boots and treading in treacle. It’s all been said. If we are looking for a cutting edge, then you won’t find it with him.
Stick him in the corner of Poyet’s living room, with castors on him and he might make a decent armchair.
