I hope that Poyet was watching? It might help him to see that there is more than one way to play football.
The formation and tactics were perfectly suited to our group of players. We don’t have particularly gifted technical players, and the possession [ ? ] stuff that GP waffled on about, was neither effective or entertaining.
As Jeremy says, we looked defensively solid, largely, I think, because we had an offensive mentality, and, until the last 10 minutes, didn’t drop so deep and invite them to attack in numbers.
I thought Jones was excellent, and that was the best I’ve seen from Gomez, Vergini and Van A.
It is still going to be nail biting, but there you can sense a new positivity in the team, and at last we look as if we will be a threat from long balls played early.
Pity that Larsson will miss the next two. Time for Rodwell to start to justify that big fee?
It seems that the response to the game has been very muted. That’s a suprrise given the nature of the performance; a more comprehensive 1-0 win would be hard to find. Much more confident, determined, faster paced and light years ahead of Poyet’s team displays in terms of purpose.
We got the ball forward quickly and Defoe’s ability to time his runs across field and between Fletcher and Wickham demonstrated what a top quality footballer he is. Scoring a goal like that which was enough to grace any derby match was simply the icing on the cake. Defensively we we very solid, and made it look relatively easy.
John Carver is a fine manager for the black and whites and I’m delighted to see his talents finally being recognised by Mike Ashley. He deserves a 5 year contract. Local bloke; big fan of the club etc. Come on Mike, you know it makes sense. He’s the best they’ve had since Richard Dinnis.
Robson Green, Jimmy Nail, Tim Healy, that annoying pair off the telly, Sting, Geordie Doon Sooth, Smogman, Idi Amin (?): FIVE IN A ROW and 3 points towards safety.
Any manager who can get a performance like that out of Gomez , is fine by me.
New manager who can organise and motivate. The team although nervous at time were organised, they worked together and gave 100% effort. The squad is sufficiently talented we just needed direction. ONWARDS &UPWARDS TOGETHER

However, beating the Mags again ain’t good enough when you go and lose to all the also rans, lets hope we can kick on from here and save the season.
