Sunderland vs Rotherham United. A big game, make it a big result for SAFC

Jake: ‘and the score will be …’

A good result at Accrington Stanley propelled Sunderland back into the top six.

Isn’t the mark of a successful side at any level that it wins even when not playing that well, Monsieur Salut asks?

On to Rotherham at home. Who will win? By what score? Tell us below – I am sorry but we are still in just-for-fun mode, but that will change if Salut! Sunderland‘s fortunes change.

Now Rotherham did even better than us at the weekend, tonking our opponents for the coming weekend, Bolton Wanderers, 6-1. We have to believe we have the squad to bring them down to earth – and then go onto win at Bolton.

Nothing to do with football but something to do with Rotherham, if any readers are interested in folk music, or willing to give it a try, check out Cara Dillon’s version of a song called Spencer the Rover.

Rotherham features in the song. But on Cara’s lips it is Rother Ham, a pronunciation I had never before heard. She’s from Northern Ireland and could easily pull me up on how I pronounce certain Irish place names. So all, I hope, is forgiven.

And Ha’way the Lads at Rotherham or Rother Ham …

  1. The eternal optimist says that my usual fower nowt has gone so let’s go one better and a clean sheet, we need to start chasing down the posh,s goal difference so five nowt to the lads

  2. I didn’t think we played that badly at Stanley. Though we weren’t dominant we did enough. I thought Rochdale caused us more problems.

I managed to win the non-mug with this season’s default scoreline of 3-1 (better than last years 1-1) but fancy us for a 4-0 tomorrow.

I’ve said all summer that I fancy Will Grigg to come good but he’s either not having much luck or he’s lacking that clinical edge. Had he put his chance on Saturday just a few inches higher it would have been in that spot that keepers hate – too high to get a foot on but low enough to mean getting a hand on it difficult.

I hope that some sections of the crowd don’t get onto him (there were some vocal idiots near me at the weekend) as he’s not the only player who wasn’t as clinical as they might have been.

McNulty had a good break and failed to control it properly on one occasion, while McGeady, Gooch and Hume all created openings but failed to find a better option, losing the ball in promising situations, when other players were available. This isn’t being critical. I’m just pointing out that in competitive games no player will get it right 100% of the time and anyone who calls themselves a supporter should do that and support our players, especially whilst the match is in progress and they can hear the reactions of the crowd.

  3. 2-1 to Safc. A tight game with Grigg finally getting on the score sheet

Can’t read too much into the Rotherham:Bolton result….Bolton have only 1 point so far and leaking goals. Based on the 1st 8 games there are no stand-out teams yet….Posh on a good run mind you. No-one has more than 4 wins…..so it’s all a bit tight….hence 2-1 to the Lads
