We buy newspapers but we don’t buy The Sun

John McCormick, who – as many readers will know – lives in Liverpool, writes: Vince commented recently that The Sun now calls SAFC “Derland” after SAFC banned them from football-related briefings. The question I would ask is why is it doing this? It’s a stupid activity that does no one any good, least of all The Sun itself, and it is being done at just the wrong time …


This is the newspaper, and I use that term though others might not, that behaved disgracefully towards Liverpool supporters, indeed the whole city, 25 years ago. On the day Sunderland played West Ham the Hillsborough inquests reopened and, I’m sure, provided many Liverpudlians with a reminder of just how wrong The Sun got it.

Colin Randall writes: football clubs that ban journalists or their employing newspapers, agencies or TV/radio stations usually look faintly ridiculous. It is not the job or duty of news organisations to kowtow to authority. I could also tell stories about ministries, companies, charities and other organisations that shamelessly break their own embargoes (eg to ensure a ‘big hit’ in one chosen media outlet). But if The Sun broke an agreed embargo on team news, as opposed to finding out about it by proper journalistic inquiry (‘proper’ would take a few pages of Salut! Sunderland to discuss), then SAFC has a point. They – by extension we – are engaged in a desperate battle against a potentially ruinous relegation and a reporter who disregarded a clearly agreed embargo would surely be naive not to expect consequences).

Steve Bruce and The Sun’s racism slur: ‘I found it obscene’

I do not have the text of The Sun‘s apology to Steve Bruce – though I’ve asked if anyone at Ready To Go can help out – and I won’t pay overseas prices to buy the paper and find out for myself. But they’ve made the apology, and it has been accepted.

You may remember that Bruce considered suing, and the club banned the paper from press conferences and the stadium, after a headline above a report of Marcos Angeleri’s quotes, about suffering from not being English, suggested Bruce had been caught in his “second race storm”. The “first” had been the Darren Bent transfer saga prompting Gérard Houllier to say not being Englsh may have accounted for criticism of him.

Honestly, I am not saying this just because he writes to me after every match, and sometimes between games, but Steve Bruce has every right to be furious with The Sun for its ridiculous treatment of Marcos Angeleri’s ‘ee no like me because I no Eeenglish quotes.

He, or the club on his behalf, has banned the paper from press conferences and the press box at the Stadium of Light. Bruce is considering suing for libel, or so I learn from the Sunderland Echo.

Again, all within his/their rights.
