Sixer’s Sevens: feisty encounter but we share the spoils at Wycombe

After a long trip to Bristol on Tuesday, Pete Sixsmith was back on the road again today for another long trip to High Wycombe, to witness a less than convincing performance against a Wanderers side who seem to have perfected the art of falling down and disrupting the flow of the game. They did it at our place and were at it again. But it worked against them as Duncan (Roadrunner) Watmore scored an equaliser late in stoppage time following in a great shot from Grant Leadbitter and netting when the keeper failed to collect cleanly.

And quiz question – when was the last time you saw three players carded whilst sat in the dug out? Sixer as usual sums up the game as the full time whistle blows in seven words.

Monsieur Salut writes: we tried very hard to find a Wycombe Wanderers supporter to talk about his or her club and ours ahead of Saturday’s game. We failed. Jon Dickinson*, our interviewee ahead of the first game, also tried to find a pal who might be up for it. He wasn’t successful either.

Sixer’s Sevens: Wycombe Wanderers give us a timely reminder

Pete Sixsmith texted at half time that there wasn’t much happening and Wycombe looked comfortable. Half an hour later he was texting to say that we had much to do.

Did we do it?yes and no – enough to keep our unbeaten at home record, not enough to keep another clean sheet and not enough to win.

Monsieur Salut writes: I may have said it before but League One is a treasure trove when it comes to Who are You? interviews, or is once I can locate a warm, witty and/or wise supporter from each club. There will be stumbles as the season progresses – the FA Cup draw left me with the task of finding not one but two Walsall candidates (it was often hard enough to get one when we were in the Championship), the Barnsley game has crept up on me and I haven’t even started thinking about Accrington Stanley and Bristol Rovers. Walsall (one fan covering both the forthcoming games) and Barnsley are sorted after a burst of energy yesterday, but recommendations for other coming games would be appreciated.

Jon Dickinson‘s* Who are You? makes the effort worthwhile. I love the pride he takes in supporting his own unfashionable local team but most of all, I love his responses about Martin O’Neill, Wycombe Wanderers’ amateur football history, what colleagues made of Sunderland when he conducted a straw poll at work and the manager who, when not managing, belts out rock music ….

We may be struggling to find opposing fans for every match but the Wycombe Wanderers volunteer, Jon Dickinson, has produced some cracking responses – and a great photo showing the Chairboys’ former manager and former playing hero Gareth Ainsworth in, shall we say, more musical that footballing mode.

Anyone who remembers the glory days of amateur football, in which Wanderers played an important part as did North-Eastern sides led by Bishop Auckland, will also find it a great read. Come back tomorrow for a treat. But for now, there’s important business ahead so Guess the Score.

Burton, Scunthorpe or Peterborough – who’ll join Sunderland, Barnsley, Charlton and Portsmouth?

UPDATE: we saw the poll had grown, improbably, to 11,000+ votes with Coventry way out in front on 26 per cent. Couldn’t blame Jimmy Hill this time but something was clearly up.  For the culprits, go to the Coventry site Sky Blues Talk    … but don’t get too cross as our lot would gladly have done the same to them. The poll, unsurprisingly, is suspended …

After Colin reposted our “who’s going up?” poll (on the left, below) in one of the Question and Answer sessions  with our owners there  was brief flurry of voting, as you might have expected given the number of visitors we had. And then things slowed down until, by the weekend, things were at a trickle, although votes were and are still coming in. Again, this was to be expected as the eyes of the football world were on Russia, where eight or nine ex-Sunderland players were taking part in the World’s most prestigious competition outside the Third Division. We now have over 800 votes cast, which is enough to be going on with, although Colin in his gut feeling poll, had almost as many when only one vote was allowed per person.
