Steve Bruce: 4,001 reasons to be cheerful

We’re not bosom buddies, Steve Bruce and me. But we know what we like, and we both like some of the same things. Sunderland winning is one of them so that takes his figure – the fabulous SAFC turnout – one higher in terms of reasons to be happy. And Steve has every right to be as chuffed as we are tonight …

Dear Colin,

Before I say anything about the game I have to say thank you to the supporters, who have helped us along.

They are one of the reasons I came here and when you see 4,000 here today it’s fantastic.

The players stuck at it today, and although they needed a bit of luck at times they kept going.

Bolton has been a bit of a happy hunting ground for me. I’m thoroughly delighted for everyone concerned because it’s been a tough couple of months.

We have made progress in my opinion – I don’t know of many teams who could come to Bolton with nine or ten players missing and get a result, which is what we’ve done today.

It was a great time to score – just before half time – and if we’d have wanted anyone out there in that one-on-one situation it would have been Bolo [Zenden].

He’s a fantastic wee player. I wish he was 25 or 26 but he keeps himself in remarkable condition.

If I am critical of myself, maybe I haven’t played him enough. It was great to see him produce a performance like that today.

It was a great ball in for their equaliser but it was our day. We needed a little bit of luck.

Sulley [Muntari] was due a goal and is never a better time to get a winner than right at the death!

All the best,

  1. Agree with Bill’s comments above. Delighted with the performance and the points. I have to ask where on earth did that performance come from after the spineless and chaacterless displays of recent weeks. Bruce is correct about Zenden, and he should have been out there from the start against Fulham. It’s clear for all to see that Jack Coback has the capability to be a really key player for us. He was our best player in an awful game last week and was absolutely outstanding yesterday. He rarely gives the ball away and is looking to be a great prospect.

  2. thats more like it the side played with a lot of spirit, we rode our luck but its about time we got a break. thats what the fans want spirit and playing for the shirt .i know we have had terrible luck with injuries but what the fans won,t put up with was the lack of passion from the players we had left.well done for the display at bolton we rode our luck at times but it was our turn to have the breaks.NOW LETS FINISH THE SEASON IN STYLE.

  3. Delighted with the performance and attitude of the whole team today. The fact Bolton equalised made the victory even more special.Great atmosphere in our end and wild celebrations at the final whistle.Brilliant. What a pity Match of the Day never seem to do us justice. Is it just big club bias or is there a hidden agenda? We keep hearing how the long-suffering Arsenal fans haven’t won a trophy for six years. My heart bleeds! Overall it’s been a disappointing season but yesterday was top drawer.

  4. The fans were absolutely fantastic today. I was as proud of them as I was of the players. Great performances all around.

  5. Well it’s time for me to eat my words and I’m glad to do it, I predicted we wouldn’t get another point all season following the Fulham game and then we turn in a performance like that with more injuries to boot. It was a spirited performance and a good game to watch, how the performances between games can vary so much has me bemused but it was a joy to watch today. Now lets carry it on until the end of the season and finish on a high, and hopefully have a cracking next season.
