On a night when Irish eyes were left streaming with tears, Salut! Sunderland cheats a little with its headline …

That headline is a product of premature exasperation.

Thierry Henry has yet to declare his hand, so to speak.

But if he wishes to sign up to the Salut! Sunderland AFC (Against Football Cheats) campaign**, we will promise never, ever to reproduce any of the trillion pictures and video clips that are surely being posted even now to websites the world over showing his moment of disgrace in tonight’s France v Republic of Ireland’s match in Paris.

And to think that Mr Henry was for so long our favourite player of any nationality in the Premier League.

When Giovanni Trapattoni idiotically excluded Andy Reid from his squad, reportedly the legacy of some late-night banjo warfare in Germany, Salut! Sunderland voted for a French win.

Tonight, as France celebrates a draw that manhandled the Irish out of the World Cup, the message changes from Allez les Bleus to A Bas les Bleus.

  3. As irish prime minister and also justice minister believe French people are cheaters, so Nicolas Sarkozy is the president of cheaters.
    Why don’t Brian Cowen cuts diplomatic relation with France,expelled all French diplomatic staff???

    Poor Ireland, so pity. If it happened that Keane or Doyle have scored with their hands, I am sure they would never tell the referee their act. For centuries English is treating irish people as subordinate as proved reaction from all your society about this, a game, just a game.

    and you are right. Very impressive roll call of bigwigd expressing regrets or even shame. While my (French) wife isn’t looking, I can say she has bene known to admit they are usually a crafty lot.

    I hope our reactions would be the same if Gerrard, Rooney or Lampard did it for England. But I also feel the ancient enmity means the French are more openly contrite about the incident than if it had been against England and not Ireland.

    But I would like to point out that anyone that can read French will see that respect to the French people for their reaction of disgust to Henry’s actions, so for the people that France I hope that they go on to do well in the World Cup!   6. At least he admitted it after the game and said it was up to the ref to spot it. One commentator I read seemed to think that if the ref had asked him, Henry would have admitted handling.

    Players are under pressure to win and many will do so with whatever means.
    I accept your non-racism. But if you mean because he’s even more “foreign” than that, he was born in Paris to parents from two overseas departements of France and is therefore as French as French as, say, Jean-Marie Le Pen.
