West Ham Champions of the Premier League (table of season ticket affordability)

Will’s view at WHL (and that’s Sunderland warming up) cost about £1500 per season

John McCormick writes: I get regular abuse banter from certain people who believe Anfield is a good value, top-class stadium. It isn’t, as I keep telling them, and now there’s proof.

But first I must make mention of Huddersfield, whose fans were told – some nine or ten years ago, apparently – that any who kept their season ticket would be able to renew it for £100 in the event of promotion. That’s not a bad way to reward loyalty and it surely resulted in the best value season ticket in the premiership. In contrast, former “who are you” guest Will Panduro paid about £1500 for his ticket at White Hart Lane last season, admittedly for a pretty good seat.

You might be tempted to say that Londoners earn a lot more, so can afford to pay higher prices but that’s not necessarily so, which poses the question “whose season tickets are the most affordable?” One answer comes from Ticketgum.com, via one of Colin’s colleagues at journalistic.org.

And where do you think Liverpool, Huddersfield and Spurs come in Ticketgum’s quite impressive analysis? Read on, ladies and gentlemen, and all will be revealed.

The new Premier League season is soon approaching and it promises to be another exhilarating season with blogs like footandball.net covering all the talking points. Ticketgum.com has calculated how long it would take for residents in each of the 20 different towns and cities where Premier League clubs are based would have to work in order to afford the cheapest single-adult season ticket, based on the average weekly wage for the area.

The research revealed:

  • West Ham United has the most affordable season ticket in the Premier League for local supporters, as they would have to work just 19 hours and 33 minutes for it at the London Stadium
  • Liverpool has the least affordable season ticket for local supporters, as they would have to work an astounding 48 hours and 18 minutes for a season ticket at Anfield
  • 65% (13 out of the 20) of Premier League teams require local supporters in the area they are based in to work more than 30 hours for the best priced single-adult season ticket

Here’s an extract from the press release for more information into the research, including a comment from a spokesperson from Ticketgum.com.

‘The new Premier League season is soon approaching and it promises to be another exhilarating season, full of twists as well as surprises. With Chelsea convincingly capturing their fifth Premier League triumph under Antonio Conte’s first full season in charge, rivals have been actively acquiring new reinforcements to knock them of their perch.

With new signings and an ecstasy of emotions to look forward to, supporters are thrilled by the prospect of what promises to be an eventful season. None more so than local supporters, who passionately embody the spirit and culture of their football clubs.

Ticketgum.com calculated how long residents in each of the 20 different towns and cities where the Premier League clubs are based would have to work in order to afford the best-priced single-adult season ticket (excluding those discounted for ‘family seating’ or any similar offers), based on the average weekly wage for the area using statistics from the Office of National Statistics (ONS).

Ticketgum’s analysis revealed that West Ham has the most affordable season ticket in the Premier League, as it would take a mere 19 hours and 33 minutes to pay for the ‘hammers’ cheapest single adult season ticket at the London Stadium.

Close behind in second is newly promoted Huddersfield Town, whose local residents would need to work slightly more at 20 hours and 33 minutes to afford the best priced season ticket. In third position is two-time Premier League champions Manchester City, where residents would have to work 21 hours and 38 minutes for a season ticket at the EtihadStadium.

The new stand at Anfield- someone has to pay for it

At the bottom of the table, Liverpool has the least affordable season ticket in the Premier League, as local residents would have to work 48 hours and 12 minutes for a season ticket at Anfield – the equivalent of 6 working days. Just above Liverpool is Mauricio Pochettino’s ambitious Tottenham Hotspur, whose local residents of Haringey (the London borough the club is based in) would have to work 42 hours and 1 minute to get the most affordable season ticket at White Hart Lane.

Despite having the highest season ticket price in the Premier League at an eye-watering £891.00, Arsenal interestingly rank 16. Local residents of Islington, would have to work 40 hours and 3 minutes to gain a single-adult season ticket at the Emirates Stadium.

Overall, 65% (13 out of 20) of Premier League teams require residents in the area they are based in to work more than 30 hours to afford the best priced single-adult season ticket for the upcoming 2017/18 season.’

A spokesperson for Ticketgum.com commented:

“This research is certainly fascinating. Whilst the focus always tends to be on who offers the cheapest
and most expensive season tickets in the Premier League based on just the price, this research
provides a more insightful approach. With residents in the towns and cities the Premier League clubs
are based in making a significant proportion of the season ticket holders, taking into account the
respective areas average weekly wages provides a better and truer indication of how affordable the
season tickets really are for local supporters”.
