This comes from John Howey, chairman of the London and Southern England branch of the SAFC Supporters’ Association……

An evening with Charlie Hurley

As some of you may know, former branch member Mark Metcalfe has been working on a book about Charlie Hurley, entitled, you might be surprised to learn, ‘The Greatest Centre Half the World Has Ever Seen’. The book has recently been published and, like the subject of all great books, Charlie is conducting signing sessions with various supporters’ branches. We have arranged for Charlie to sign copies of his books and generally chat about football the evening before the Chelsea game, 31st October. Copies of the book will be on sale on the evening at a discounted price.

The venue is ‘The Offside Bar’ which is at 271/3 City Road, EC1, half way between Angel and Old Street tube stations. We have hired the venue for the evening so it will be a private function, with the place to ourselves. Tickets will be £7.50 and include a buffet, and there is of course a fully licensed bar.

Tickets can be obtained on a first come first served basis by sending a cheque, payable to SAFCSA (London Branch) and a SAE to Tracey Hawkins, at 27 Oak End, Buntingford, Herts, SG9 9BU.

On the evening, there will also be a raffle which, on this occasion, will be a charity raffle rather than to raise funds for the branch. Many of you will by now have heard the very sad news about Dave Hillam, who passed away recently. Dave had contributed significantly to this book, and as a result it had been decided that the proceeds from the raffle would go to the Stroke Association, which is the charity nominated by Dave’s family. Sadly that decision has been overtaken by the loss of another branch member, Terry McKenna, and we therefore also intend to make a donation to his family’s chosen charity. Of course, the more prizes we have, the more tickets we will sell, and anyone who wants to donate a prize of any kind, no matter how large or small is very welcome to do so. Please either contact me in advance, johnhowey73@aol.com or simply bring something along on the night.
