Peter Reid and Micky Gray: footie banter and Shields spice

Sometimes people asking for plugs make Monsieur Salut cross. Sometimes he doesn’t mind a bit.

In fact, the Sunderland-supporting events host Phil Hourigan did not strictly speaking ask for one, but included M Salut as a recipient of a direct message at Twitter – @salutsunderland in case you’d like to follow – about his latest function, featuring Peter Reid and Mick(e)y Gray at Hedworth Hall, South Shields on February 6.

It combines the elements of a cracking evening: great talk from figures of Sunderland’s recent history and a taste of Asia – the curries for which Phil assures me is a Hedworth speciality; they’re certainly a Shields speciality – washed down with whatever you fancy, which I am sure is not included in ticket prices.

Both Reidy and Micky have proved to be in demand by the media, popping up at different times on talkSPORT and elsewhere.

Phil, whose other planned events include an evening with Jody Craddock “and friends” at the Corner Flag pub in Sunderland, in aid of Jody’s testimonial fund (aka pension), on February 1, says tickets are selling fast for the Hedworth night, 170 out of 250 gone since bookings started on Dec 25. It’s supposed to be £35 a head, £250 for a table for 10, but I believe he’d settle for £25 for individual tickets so say Salut! Sunderland sent you and haggle. “I’m hopeful of a sellout which will be great given the plight of the club,” he says. “I do a lot of footy evenings and think this one will be an excellent line up. Peter Reid hasn’t done many in the North East. I’ve done lots with Micky Gray and he is excellent on the mike. They haven’t done any together.

“I’ll be doing two halves of chat with the lads and the audience can submit written questions.”
