John McCormick writes: Were there any positives to take from today? I’m trying to think of some but I’m struggling. I suppose, with Palace losing, that we’re not out of it, which is something David Moyes alluded to on “Radio 5 live” after the game. If I remember correctly he said we’re not too far away [from safety], which is true, but in every area of the pitch West Brom, with whom we’ve contested many a promotion challenge and with whom we’ve shared many a relegation battle, were giving Ellis Short a lesson in how to run a club.
I suppose another positive is that we do have a manager with a Premiership pedigree, although I think he might well be trying to rebuild a relegated side next season. Anyway, here’s what he thinks after yet another defeat:
“There were some good things in the game, but ultimately we gave away two poor goals.
We weren’t tight enough on the corner and our defenders were taken out of the game very easily and it was a wonderful strike to beat us.
We played well at times in the first half and much better in the second, but the goals cloud a lot of that and when you lose a game that’s what gets talked about.
We weren’t strong enough; we need to stop conceding the way we have been. I think we’re missing Lamine Kone, he offers us a bit more strength.
George [Honeyman] was our best player; he deserved to keep his place after doing well against Burnley in the week.
Having Victor [Anichebe] back was a big positive for us.
We’ve got over a week until our next game now, hopefully that will let us get some more players back in training, we need it.
PS I’m still listening to Radio 5 live and there’s a bloke with a cockney accent going on about his team – Liverpool. What’s wrong with supporting your local club, matey? Ok, that would mean me supporting Liverpool, too, but at heart I’m a faith-keeping lad from County Durham and it will never happen.
