Our thanks to Tales From Publishing, the people behind the Tales From the Red and Whites series on books about Sunderland AFC, for donating this week’s Guess the Score prize …
Stand by, until tomorrow, for a serious contender for the end-of-season awards for the best of the 2018/19 Who are You? features.
We may be struggling to find opposing fans for every match but the Wycombe Wanderers volunteer, Jon Dickinson, has produced some cracking responses – and a great photo showing the Chairboys’ former manager and former playing hero Gareth Ainsworth in, shall we say, more musical that footballing mode.
Anyone who remembers the glory days of amateur football, in which Wanderers played an important part as did North-Eastern sides led by Bishop Auckland, will also find it a great read. Come back tomorrow for a treat. But for now, there’s important business ahead so Guess the Score.
Yes, it’s a return to prize editions though we’ll have to see how long that can be sustained. Instead of the usual mug, we are offering a copy of the new volume (number three) of the Tales From the Red and Whites collection.
Lance Hardy, Graeme Anderson and Rob Mason edited the book, which focuses on six Sunderland managers from the days of Roker Park as well as the Stadium of Light. Ken Knighton, Lawrie McMenemy, Malcolm Crosby, Peter Reid, Gustavo Poyet and Simon Grayson speaking “openly and honestly” to the authors.
As for Saturday’s match, it’s one we would expect to win. But all runs, winning or losing, end some time so SAFC will need to be on their mettle to keep up their own and Jack Ross’s extraordinary progress and remain in the top two.
Wanderers fans are warmly invited to enter, but there’ll be no prize variation: a Wycombe winner would have to settle for the book and either enjoy it for itself or pass it on to a Sunderland acquaintance. They exist, even in Buckinghamshire.
Be first with the correct scoreline, have a UK delivery address and you win.
Ha’way the Lads, our Lads. And since I began writing this post, we have signed up – on a reward in heaven basis – Who are You? interviewees for the Barnsley and both Walsall games (league and cup).
