Birflatt Boy: end the Mignolet love-in. He’s Liverpool’s now, our history

Birflatt Boy lay bare his innermost thoughts
Birflatt Boy gets a weighty issue off his mind

As Birflatt Boy would have it, both Pete Sixsmith and Monsieur Salut have been guilty of wilfully wishing Simon Mignolet well. But is it right that the Sunderland Echo quoted him as saying once he learned of Liverpool’s interest, he set his heart on leaving? Zero mention, we learn at the Blackcats list, ‘of being sad to leave, hard decision, enjoyed his time here, appreciated the support’. Well, maybe he’s already said as much elsewhere. It would still cut no ice with our shadiest contributor …

As Liverpool vultures circle, Simon Mignolet knows he’ll be remembered with affection

Sixer offers Mag builder a history lesson
Sixer says Mignolet will remain a hero in SAFC eyes

Is he off or isn’t he? We have had to endure speculation for a season or more that the lure of a bigger club – yes, there are a handful of them – would deprive us of Simon Mignolet’s services. It was perhaps inevitable that the flattering interest would eventually turn his head. We have to be adult about this: he is not a Sunderland supporter but a professional footballer who happens to be playing for us and must make the most of his abilities in what, even for keepers, is a short career. Thinking of Liverpool, even players who are Sunderland supporters and playing for SAFC are generally more attached to professional progression and self-interest than sentiment. Rather like most other people. Pete Sixsmith discusses the contribution to our cause Mignolet has made and for which, if go he must, he will always receive a warm welcome from the vast majority of Sunderland fans …

French Fancies: how L’Equipe saw Liverpool’s demolition of Newcastle

Toon disaster seen as French disaster

Salut! Sunderland
is, of course, a gloat-free zone. We recognise that no mature Newcastle United supporter ever mocked Sunderland after the 7-1 defeat at Everton, 7-2 at Chelsea or indeed 5-1 at St James’ Park.

So, not least in the knowledge that bad results lie ahead for us as well as them given the nature of football, there is no specific intention to rub salt in the wounds of yesterday’s mauling by Jordan Henderson and Liverpool of the Mags.

Martin’s Musings on Liverpool 3 Sunderland 0: no joy on Merseyside as Sunderland slump to defeat

Martin O’Neill

The transfer window opens and two players leave the club with no replacements coming in. No doubt there are some lined up and we shall see some new names on the Sunderland roster but Martin O’Neill in his post-match e-mail to M Salut highlights the smallness of the squad and for once, has little to temper the disappointment of the result.

Sixer’s Sevens: Liverpool 3 SAFC 0. ‘Painful to watch’, says Sunderland stalwart

Pete Sixsmith has witnessed some embarrassing Sunderland performances over the decades. This must be down there with the worst of them, a five or six-goal thrashing dressed up as a mere 3-0 romp. Yet we missed two or three chances, too. The quote in the headline comes from Gary Bennett, summarising on BBC Radio Newcastle; Martin O’Neill must have been tempted to send him on. And only the boss knows where we go from here …

New Year Greetings: Spurs have dived off, Guess the Score at Liverpool

'At last the tight git is giving one away with no strings', says Jake
‘At last the tight git is giving one away with no strings’, says Jake

Happy New Year from Salut! Sunderland

They cannot all read and write as well as Michael Gove would like, but it was good to have so many Tottenham fans coming here to respond to Pete Sixsmith’s dangerously provocative comments.

Consider these samples taken from the offending march report:

“Spurs played well, looked a potential top four side” … “they had a little bit too much for us” … Lloris “had an outstanding last half hour, his punching the ball a great lesson for any aspiring keeper”.

Liverpool ‘Who are You?’: Anfield Wrap’s lowdown on Kenny, Rafa and ‘dreadful Hodgson’

Happy new year to all Salut! Sunderland readers

Just before Liverpool romped to victory at QPR, one of their fans, Colin Bundred, tweeted: “Devastated to see Henderson and Downing starting for us. How low has this once great club sunk?” Henderson helped his team to a three-goal lead before being subbed. But has he still plenty to do to win over Anfield? Neil Atkinson**, presenter of the Anfield Wrap podcastfeels Henderson has greatly improved but has some way to go before he can get close to the worship directed at his hero, Steven Gerrard. Interviewed before that game at Loftus Road, Neil had lots more to say, ahead of our own tough trip to Anfield, on Liverpool greats, the legacy of Hillsborough, Kenny’s downfall and what he sees as the folly of getting worked up about what Salut! Sunderland tends to call “cheating”. Arise Sir Gareth and Sir Jermain? …
