West Ham just pip Manchester(s) as hooligans of the season

John McCormick writes: It has been a strange day. First, an e-mail from Pete Sixsmith asking if I’d voted and including and article. I had, but closer examination revealed the article was his report from the Hull game and the e-mail was dated 7th May.

Then came an e-mail from Oddbins telling me time was running out – what do they know about our search for a manager?

It wasn’t until 5pm that normal service was resumed, with a request from Colin asking if I could post this short article, from one of our occasional guests, Abby Chinery, of journalistic.org.

Happy to oblige, Abby:

REVEALED:

Which football fans are to blame for arrests rising on British railways for fourth year running?

‘From 2015-16, crime on the railway has increased for the first time in 10 years, by 4%, the equivalent of 2,030 offences. Adding to crime problems on our transport network, football-related arrests made by the British Transport Police (BTP) has risen for the fourth year running.

Football ticket sales site ticketgum.com has considered the issue of hooliganism on British Rails by analysing data from the Home Office and a Freedom of Information request, released by the BTP, about football-related arrests in 2016.
There were some interesting discoveries:

• For the 2015-2016 season, West Ham had the most reported incidents of all Premier League clubs
• 22% of all football-arrests are made by the British Transport Police
• 60% of these are due to public disorder
• 20% of these arrests are made during Premier League matches.
• There was an increase of 36 incidents of ‘violent disorder’ last year.

On this matter, the British Transport Police stated the following,

“We adopt a proactive approach to football policing, with officers escorting trains before and after matches and patrolling stations where large numbers of fans are expected.”

Please see the press release for more information as well as two examples of acts of hooliganism reported last year.
