Sixer’s Sevens: Peterborough Utd 0 SAFC 2. Job done

This is where Pete Sixsmith captures the glory and shame, hope and despair, excitement and ennui of the Sunderland matchday experience. When, rarely, Pete is absent or delayed, a supersub does it for him and the seven-word verdict is preceded by an asterisk. Pete’s full analysis of the game will usually appear within a day or two.

  1. Job done, spirits still high, all you can ask for. Well done MON and the Lad’s.

The Boro draw looks interesting and they will definately be up for a cup upset, but we are at home with our cup tails up, this is a new experience bearing in mind our last few seasons cup runs, or rather lack of them!.

  2. This kind of game can be a can of worms. A team with nothing to lose in front of its home crowd can really play above itself. On a different tier, look what Sheffield Wednesday did to West Ham. But we kept Portsmouth under control and did what we had to do.

  3. Poor Sess looked tired. He has given so much in the past few weeks. I noted O’Neill’s fatherly arm around his shoulder when he came off. You can so see why players give their best for O’Neill-he has such an engaging manner and you can see that balance of caring concern and firm boundaries, which is the essense of good man management.

  4. A goodl professional performance. Solid throughout the game. A lifetime of slip ups suggested to me that this was going to be more difficult than it turned out to be. Very pleased. Martin’s magic is continuing unabated.
