Martin’s Musings from Swansea: ‘fitness will bring fun’

Martin O’Neill accepts in his post-match e-mail that we might have done better, but hints that the good times are just around the corner …

Dear Colin,

It’s a good point.

When Swansea went down to 10 men I thought that might have been our opportunity to apply a little bit more pressure but unfortunately we weren’t able to do that.

We didn’t cause them any problems inside their penalty area for the last 10-15 minutes.

Swansea are a fine footballing team and when we look back on the match we’ll be able to pick out some things that we should have done better.

It’s our second league game and it was only Steven Fletcher’s first and even though he’s lacking fitness I thought he did exceptionally well.

Stéphane Sessegnon is in the same boat and I don’t think you can afford to have that many players playing in the Barclays Premier League that aren’t fully fit.

That fitness will come over the next couple of weeks – and then it should be fun.

All the best,

Martin O’Neill

  1. We ve got to be happy with a draw away to an in form team who hadnt conceded and have scored 10 already.

So why was I left feeling unhappy and glad to hear the final whistle after plalying 15 mins against 10 men?An opportunity missed here…but I am sure we will take others later on as the team grows and gets (hopefully) fitter.

  2. They will pass teams out of existence if you let them. Swansea play some really good football. Our problem in the second half was that we simply didn’t have an out ball for the defence. Midfield was pushed back and we had 11 men behind the ball nearly all of the time.

It was a “smash and grab” performance where we barely looked a threat unless Norman Stanley got on the end of something. A great start for him but Clatter ’em all was a big miss for us when he limped off. Part of the problem seems to be that we have midfielders at full back.
