Gus Poyet said in his post-match e-mail what we must all have been thinking: a rousing night for all who support Sunderland but now let’s do it in the more important setting of Premier League football. Start catching up those just above us, ready to overtake at least three of them, and the Capital Cup semis become a delicious bonus …
Dear Colin,
It was a matter of belief, a matter of knowing that sooner or later if you keep playing the same way that you’re going to get the rewards.
Credit to the players, they stuck by the plan and they believed in what we were doing and as soon as we started passing the ball a bit better we started creating the chances.
Of course, we would like to score before we did, but sometimes it’s even better to score at the end because it’s a different flavour.
We had the opportunity to go and beat one of the best teams in the world so I’m sure that the players saw the opportunity and they wanted to take it.
Of course sometimes you give a little bit of space to the opposition but it’s a cup game, it was a typical cup game with goals right at the beginning of the second-half , right at the end of the game and right at the end of extra-time.
I think it’s something important and something that is important for the fans because they find themselves in a semi-final and they haven’t been there for many, many years.
Now we’ll try to rest because it was a very big effort tonight and now we need to look forward to the weekend.
So let’s see if we can maintain this confidence ahead of Saturday.
All the best,
Gus Poyet
