Salut! Sunderland: the way it is

AN UPDATED VERSION OF THIS FEATURE CAN BE FOUND AT https://safc.blog/2014/08/the-way-it-is-plus-scores-as-they-happen/

Here is the feature we introduced with the intention of getting readers talking.
Salut! Sunderland: the way it is
will essentially be your forum. It removes the need to wait for Sixer, Monsieur Salut, John Mac, Ken Gambles, Malcolm Dawson, Jeremy Robson or any of the the others to catch up on the news. We haven’t the resources to be any quicker.

So this is the place to comment on some topical event you may have heard about but not yet seen reported or analysed at Salut! Sunderland, a match we haven’t got round to recording the result of .. or indeed anything else, Sunderland or football generally related, on your mind. In other words, it’s a chance to air your thoughts on as wide a variety of subjects as you wish without wondering whether the comment fits the posting.

There will still be the usual opportunity to comment at postings on specific topics. But Salut! Sunderland: the way it is will usually be kept at the top of the home page – https://safc.blog – so that it is one of the first things you see on arriving at the site by that route.

If it disappears, that is likely to be because something important has happened or is about to happen and this feature temporarily seems to get in the way. It will always be restored to the top of the home page once the excitement passes.

Every so often, the deputy editor Malcolm Dawson – who possesses the tidy mind the editor lacks – will purge the comments, once their relevance diminishes, so that they are not allowed to grow so long as to drown new posts from readers.

  1. Usually the simplest explanation is the correct one.

He went back to Liverpool at the end of last season. having hit a decent run of form and got a few goals. At that point there wasn’t a hope of him getting a game ahead of Sturridge and Suarez, so he probably thought he’d be better off making a move. At that point, coming to us had probably been discussed informally, but we were in no rush to pay his wages over the summer.

Next thing you know, Suarez has done his cannibal act, and Liverpool have bought Origi (and sent him immediately on loan).Borini must think he’s in with a chance of starting at this point ahead of Lambert, who they also signed, as he sees potential targets like Cavani come to nothing.

It seemed like a good idea at the time but not so good now, perhaps. Who hasn’t gone through that process, several times in their lives.?

He’s not coming. It’s take a remarkably long time for people to realise this.

  2. Well done to Mrs Wesley for being sensible enough to use a BOGOF offer on the family’s visit to Legoland. Although if she’d asked I could have told her it’s crap and saved her the journey.

  3. I cannot believe that we have negotiated a fee for player who doesn’t want to join us; what is the bleeding point? We’ve spent valuable time and energy on a fruitless chase. What kind of half-arsed operation does that? Surely the player was quietly sounded out about joining us, we had a season for that conversation to happen, for god’s sake! Only Sunderland could cock something like this up.
Even if he does join us, it’s obvious his heart isn’t in it, if it was he would be in England waiting to sign, not jetting thousands of miles across the Atlantic. We need to withdraw the offer, tell him to sod off and get someone who wants to play for us.

    • I think Gus will have identified more targets than just Borini….Joel Campbell for one. I do however think that Fabio must have shown some level of interest or we wouldn’t have pursued him. I reckon he will go to Italy before the window closes’

The problem for fans is that you never know how old the news reported in the press is. For all we know we may have given up on him weeks ago. Personally I reckon he has finally given us a definite ‘ thanks for the offer, but no thanks ,my preference is to go back to Italy.’

      • I also thought was finished until Liverpool look like they will be signing Balotelli. Surely Fabio can work out where he stands in their pecking order. But I still reckon he will be off back to Italy. Signing for Inter or Napoli will mean he has a better chance of being picked for Italy.

    • Ifos

Agree completely, and would add a further point – he is not that good!

In my opinion he is an okay player, and I like his attitude, but he is not the sort of striker that dominates defences, and he is nowhere near worth £14m [ reported ] If he was, does anyone seriously think Liverpool would let him go?

We should have moved on from this guy long ago.

  4. Does anyone else think that Borini has no intention of signimgng for us and that Liverpool have agreed a price with us knowing that, but really hoping that this might prompt one of the big Italian clubs to make a bid for him. That bid may well be less than the £14 million allegedly agreed with us …..but £10 million is better than nothing for a player who is surplus to their requirements.

    Ho hum…..Danny Graham anyone?
