Brazil 2014: cool California Dreaming meets raw NYC passion as USA celebrate

You, the readers of Salut! Sunderland,
voted the USA by a sizeable margin to be our second team at Brazil 2014. Uruguay and Belgium vie for the runners-up slot but find themselves a long way behind.

So join in our US correspondent Grant Tunkel’s ecstasy as he and a lot of other Americans celebrate the John Brooks winner in USA 2 Ghana 1. USA, USA, USA indeed …

Grant said in his overnight report that the atmosphere at the Lansdowne Road in New York City – no prizes for guessing the allegiance of regulars when England play Ireland – was wild when that second goal went in.

It was just a few minutes after Asamoah Gyan’s clever backheel had set up Andre Ayew for an equaliser to the USA’s early goal, well taken by Clive Dempsey without a full minute on the clock having passed.

We all know that Jozy Altidore, having missed a half-chance (I put it no more harshly than that), was stretchered off with a hamstring injury after 21 minutes. I felt for him when it happened and wish him the speediest and strongest recovery possible.

Jozy: poor sod
Jozy: poor sod

But Ha’way our Next Best Lads. Portugal and Germany should be a doddle.
