Chelsea Guess the Score: Terry shaking in his boots after Arsenal heroics?

The bullish tone of the headline should offend no one.

Monsieur Salut is notoriously unyielding on final games of the season where nothing is any longer at stake. They are, simply, more important than any England game, even ones that dictate qualification or otherwise for the Euros or World Cup. That goes for our reserves, too.

But the Premier League finale also brings the Guess the Score finale. For the last time this season, a mug is offered to the Lad or Lass who correctly predicts, before kickoff, the score in Chelsea vs Sunderland, champions versus survival specialists.

It may be the most honest Guess the Score we’ve seen at Salut! Sunderland. No reader will feel obliged to vote with loyalty and heart as opposed to reality and head.

A few things to bear in mind: we may have thrashed 7-2 in 2010 but were the best of the three teams hit for seven at Stamford Bridge that season in terms of goals scored. We went back to the Bridge 10 months later and walloped them 3-0. Some of us were there for an early 4-2 win. Pete Sixsmith and others remember the moronic Chelsea pitch invasion when we bat them in a League Cup semi in 1985 (a Chelsea-supporting friend cries foul to this day, insisting that at least one police horse was offside).

And we don’t even know what John Terry & Co will face in this mutual party. Will Catts get the day off to ensure no yellow cards record? Is this the moment to throw Duncan Watmore on? Should we give Vito Mannone a last taste of Premier action in Sunderland’s cause?

Have a go, whether you’ve won three mugs this season or none, ever. Chelsea fans are warmly welcomed to enter the competition; a winner of the Blue persuasion would receive a mug with suitably different design.

You could be the next No 12. A winning Gooner would get a mug suited to his or her tastes

And Ha’way the Lads, whichever Lads Dick chooses. Oh what fun it would be to win in west London and end the season on an even higher note.

  1. Give a few of the kids a game and give them long enough so we can see what they are made of!…I hope Hull go down,i’d rather play the mags than them…Hope Boro go up,more local derbys….score on Sat….1-2 to safc….

  2. “I’ll go for a repeat pf the 3-0 win under Bruce and hope that Steve does a Phil Brown and serenades the Boothferry Park faithful as City stay up and the third relegation place is filled by the team currently lying in 17th place.”

I’d rather the Mags survived, than face the prospect of Doubtfire doing Beach Boys covers.

  3. 3-3

I think Malcolm’s right. Mannone in. Larsson and Graham certainly out, as well as Catts.

Bridcutt and Giacci in? Maybe Honeyman or Agnew. Would love to see Duncan get his chance from the start instead of Wickham (who must realise that his chance being peddled now is only eclipsed by Graham).

  4. Don’t usually like to tempt fate, but what the heck- nothing to worry about, so 1-0 to the Lads and a hope that the boys going down for the weekend to take in the cricket have a great time.

  5. I’ll go for a repeat pf the 3-0 win under Bruce and hope that Steve does a Phil Brown and serenades the Boothferry Park faithful as City stay up and the third relegation place is filled by the team currently lying in 17th place.

  6. Nothing to play for. Chelsea need to redeem themselves after a bad loss. Chelsea 4-1 SAFC

  7. Then me post disappears – can’t gat the hang of this new fangled technology – anyway I said 2-0 Chelsea as we’ll have tired legs

    • All sorted now – your disappearing post went into the pending approval box because the name didn’t match the e-mail address.

Could be a few new faces on both sides on Sunday. Think Larsson needs a rest – Catts starts next season with a three match ban if he gets another yellow – Wickham has done nowt. Mannone might get a run out – instead of Danny Graham – which brings me back to something I wonder about every year – do our keepers have a red and white shirt with their name and number on in case they are asked to do a David James and come off the bench to go up front for a minute or two near the end?

  8. There’s gonna be tired legs out there so 2-0 Chelski I’m afraid but hey ho they are the champions 🙂

  9. Greetings from a Chelsea supporter who will be there on Sunday

I think it will be a 3-1 sorry to us. I think we will be off the lead and your lot probably will be emotionally drained following your exploits on Wednesday
