SAFC 6-0 Newcastle. Seven in a row, after a fashion

From the excellent Chris Young of the Sunderland Echo comes the heartening news that Duncan Watmore scored three times as Sunderland walloped Newcastle 6-0 in the secret friendly.

Seven-in-a-row? Of course not. Of no importance? Debatable but yes, if you support NUFC – though even some of their fans are joking about Steve McClaren telling the TV afterwards he was proud of his lads’ “fantastic” performance and was just disappointed at the result.

The two North East rivals met at the Stadium of Light to give the fringe figures at both clubs the chance to gain some much-needed match fitness, with neither side in action in the FA Cup this weekend.

And it was Sunderland who finished as emphatic winners, with Duncan Watmore netting a hat-trick in the 6-0 triumph. Steven Fletcher (twice) and Jack Rodwell were also on the scoresheet for Sunderland. New signing Dame N’Doye got some much-needed minutes for the Black Cats, with the on-loan Trabzonspor striker last playing for his parent club in December.

  1. Must admit I had a good chuckle to myself when I heard the result , especially since Steven Taylor played . It seems we fielded a more experienced team than them and the result doesn’t mean much really , apart from its leg pulling potential .We did keep a clean sheet though so that’s something and we scored a few also . It’s also nice to be on the right end of a thumping for once !
