Jan Kirchhoff: from short-lived villain to cultured hero – and now recognised

Jake: ‘great stuff, Jan’

Congratulations Jan Kirchhoff on your player of the month award

At Salut! Sunderland and ESPN, as elsewhere, Jan Kirchhoff came in for some stick after that wretched debut at Spurs. Mitigating circumstances have subsequently emerged and Sam Allardyce has admitted his German signing was not match-fit and should not have been sent on as a sub.

And just look what has happened since. If Big Sam does not deserve to be part of a club facing the grave danger of relegation, nor does Kirchhoff. Monsieur Salut’s view is that we have not seen a better midfielder since Claudio Reyna.

Jan richly deserved the PFA Fans’ Player of the Month award for April.

Beyond that, we cannot improve on the club site’s report:

The German midfielder has been a consistent performer within the Black Cats’ midfield moulding grit and determination with panache and style, as well as forming an impressive partnership with Yann M’Vila following his January arrival from Bayern Munich.

… The past 24 hours have seen fans vote for Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge, who reached the UEFA Europa League final last night, Newcastle United’s Andros Townsend and Kirchhoff, but the Black Cats midfielder came out on top to collect his first PFA award.

And Jan’s thoughts ahead of a game that may answer Chelsea fans’ questions about what it’s like to experience big home crowds?

I would like to thank the supporters, who have been unbelievable since I arrived at Sunderland – they are simply amazing. Also my thanks go to my team-mates, without them it would not have been possible to win this award. This is a very special football club and I am honoured to accept the award on behalf of everyone.

Ha’way Jan and all the other Lads.
