This was Monsieur Salut’s Facebook posting:
Wanted France to win, they deserved it overall but Portugal suddenly burst into life for just enough of the second period of extra time to tear up the script. Both teams responsible for an awful final …
On Twitter, I invoked the Françoise Sagan classic (no, haven’t read it).
I am delighted for one Sunderland supporter, Sam Verissimo, who rose to Salut! Sunderland’s challenge to do a Who are You? interview. And I am sorry for Véronique Laniel, another SAFC fan who rooted for her native France. Thanks to both for their terrific interviews.
Football didn’t do well out of it all. Euro 2016 was dominated by negative football, with the romance of Wales and Iceland to compensate, but France probably deserved rare more than Portugal to win.
Now, roll on the resumption of real football …
French should have won on chances created. I feel sorry for them; I was rooting for them because the country has not been through an easy time.
I believe it was the Guardian match blogger (when he wasn’t complaining about his RSI or need for the loo) who commented that major tournament finals have been going steadily downhill for some years now. Mark Clattenburg didn’t help by dispensing yellow cards as if he were a street-corner revivalist handing out religious tracts to anyone who happened by.
Is this, btw, the first final where one of the players has actually vomited on the pitch?
Thought that Clattenburg did an OK job.
