Happy Christmas to all Salut! Sunderland contributors, readers and supporters

Crikey. You pushed away the turkey and Christmas pud, took off your funny paper hat and interrupted the Queen’s Speech, Frozen or Paul O’Grady (what, no Morecambe and Wise?) to step inside the pages of Salut! Sunderland.

Well, you know what to do if you’d like to check out our buildup to the Boxing Day match at Old Trafford. Just go to the home page and navigate with ease towards Guess the Score, the Manchester United “Who are You?”, a reminder of Sixer’s superb report from our 1-0 victory in May 2014 and more …

But what if you just wondered whether we’d bother to say Happy Christmas?

There are, in fact, nearly 3.3 million reasons to do so. That is the the number of visits to this modest site since it launched at the beginning of 2007.

Salut! Sunderland is a proud offshoot of Salut! (“Colin Randall on France, current affairs, travel, the media – and more besides”) and cousin of Salut! Live (folk music and that sort of thing) and Salut! North (North East nostalgia).

It exists because people like Sixer, Malcolm Dawson, John McCormick, Jake, Wrinkly Pete, Ken Gambles, Bob Chapman, Rob Hutchison and Hayley Penman (keep it coming, Hayley, and delighted the club recognised your recent 12th birthday) write, draw or edit for it. Not to mention all those I have probably overlooked.

John Penman at Facebook: ‘SAFC missed my email requesting a birthday wish for Hayley on the scoreboards. Instead she received a personally signed card from the team. Well done and thanks SAFC for making one daughter delighted and thrilled’

It also exists because there are just enough advertisers to keep costs down and sponsors to keep competitions interesting.

But most of all it is here because of you, the readers. Your support is magnificent and deeply appreciated.

                      HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO YOU ALL

  1. Call The Midwife, talk to the mother-in-law, or see if there’s a post on Salut! ? No contest! Thanks to all who maintain the excellent standard of this site with contributions and comments.

  2. I am more than a little concerned about something I didn’t get from Mrs Wrinkly………………. Stop that!………. For the first time in years I did not get a single item of clothing. Hmmmm. Oh hang on, do slippers count?
Anyway, thanks Colin for keeping the site going.

  3. Just been drinking champagne with some LFC season ticket holders who kept harping on about “bitter Blues”. Something to do with a recent football match, I think.

  4. Salut! Sunderland is the only site where I read almost every article, because I know it will be of high quality, entertaining and often humorous and a little quirky.
It does not simply give a rehash, or a direct copy, of something you can find elsewhere,
Well done to all at Salut! Sunderland. I won’t shorten the name to just the initials, as it would appear to be rather unfortunate.

  5. Some posh ginger biscuits, two bottles of red somewhat better than I usually get at the end of the road, biogs of Ewan MacColl and Bob Dylan and some delicious if politically incorrect foie gras.
Worst? Not a present as such but the oysters for lunch in France today. Always detested them ….

  6. My wife and I are holed up at home in Kent with the residue of heavy colds, but my spirits were lifted by my son sending me a selfie of him having a drink with David Moyes in the Hilton Hotel outside the SOL yesterday.

Best wishes to all who engage and contribute to this great site, which IMO is unique in its knowledge, humour and [ above all ] lack of abuse and vitriol.

    Merry Christmas.

  7. Come on then – what did we all get for Chrimbo? – best and worst please. My best – complete box set of When The Boat Comes In (been wanting it for ever). Honourable mention to SAFC Legends calendar. Worst – a pair of geriatric slippers (with Velcro)!

  8. Well said Phil, I’ve just got a few minutes free after setting up my youngest’s Archery set – a gift from his aunt, who will not be in range of his first attempts at marksmanship- he’s obsessed with The Arrow tv show.

My next posting may well be under the moniker “One-eyed Dusty”

All the best to everyone, this site is truly class in the articles, memories, and superb artwork.

  9. Can I please be be the first to echo your sentiments, from the side of the readers who return again and again because of the quality content.

Many thanks to all that make it such a brilliant site and I hope each of you have a great Christmas plus everything you would wish for yourselves in the New Year.
