Update: and eventually, the statement came [see John McCormicks comment below], short enough to fit into a stop press bulletin – Sunderland Association Football Club and Jack Rodwell have agreed by mutual consent that Jack will leave the club at the end of June 2018. The club and Jack wish each other every success for the future.
Better late than never, SAFC.com will get round to confirming what seems common knowledge and also classifies as good news: Jack Rodwell and the club have reportedly reached agreement to cancel his contract.
Rodwell, arguably the worst of many wretched signings in recent times, is said by Sky and others to be hoping for a move to an MLS club in the USA. Good luck to them.
We don’t know the ins and outs. He won’t have left for nothing. And we won’t save the full salary he had been “earning” – £73,000 a week for, well, doing nothing and wanting to do nothing – because it was reduced all the way down to £43K as a result of our latest relegation.
But the Sunderland Echo’s Phil Smith says the payoff was a long way short of what we’d have had to put in his bank account had he stayed this season, presumably still reporting sick or unwilling.
Red faces time: how we reported Rodwell’s signing – https://safc.blog/2014/08/a-warm-salut-sunderland-welcome-to-jack-rodwell-and-who-may-be-next/
Monsieur Salut does not blame Rodwell for being keen to look after his own interests (who in honesty would walk away from such a fat-cat salary, especially when so little is required in return?).
But he would love to know, in full, why he has not played since last September and why, on his own analysis, he has been such a gigantic flop since signing in 2014. Injuries do not seem to offer a complete answer.
The pages of Salut! Sunderland are open to Jack Rodwell should he feel in some way unfairly treated. Usual rates apply – ask Sixer , Jack, and he’ll confirm the fee for writing here is a round figure. Along the lines of £43,000 minus £43,000.
Germany are out and Rodwell is gone! What a day this has been, buzzing! pic.twitter.com/Yt8uAEpyk5

My goodness, we have lost our great ” box to box ” midfielder [ as described by – I think , that unique judge of footballing brilliance, PDC.
My regret at his departure is only clouded by my sadness at Germany’s inglorious world cup exit at the hands of the bastion of football excellence, that is South Korea.
It truly is a sad day!
It’s official https://www.safc.com/news/team-news/2018/june/rodwell-leaves-sunderland How much has he “earned” by doing it now and not when we were relegated?
Now time for Kone, Ndong, Khazri, Djilibodji, to move to pastures new along with Borini and Lens who will be gone from the payroll on Sunday, at least in part. It wouldn’t surprise me if the club will still be paying some of their wages.
I’m probably in a minority in hoping we hang on to Cattermole but unlike some of the above he has never shirked his responsibilities. That said I shan’t be critical if he moves elsewhere. A total revamp is needed and a bit of patience from the support and hopefully we will see the green shoots of recovery. My God! I’m quoting Norman Lamont. NURSE!
