Rob Hutchison is a regular visitor and contributor to these pages and his end of season review appears at this link. His daughter Olivia and son Louis are also known to our readers and have complemented their dad’s thoughts by recalling their best days on the road with Sunderland in the season mercifully ended …
Olivia’s five top away days…
Wimbledon – A bouncing small away allocation and Lee cattermole scoring a brace
Walsall – Down to 10 men and came back from 2-0 to draw in the 89th minute. May not have won but a great second half of football!
Rochdale – A last minute winner after being 1-0 and (at the time) giving us promotion hopes, scenes!
Portsmouth – A 0-0 draw but secured our place at Wembley for the play off final. Such a solid performance and buzzing atmosphere
Portsmouth (Checkatrade final) – Memorable day despite the result. Seeing Sunderland play at Wembley was a proud moment and McGeady’s free kick and last minute extra time goal gave me celebrations and feelings that I’ll never forget!
Louis’s top five away days …
Wimbledon – Snuck into a sold out away end from the home end to see a comeback with a Catts double
Rochdale – Last minute Honeyman winner to make the place bouncing on a beautiful afternoon
Portsmouth – Best 0-0 game I’ve seen to send us through to Wembley. Watching them get so frustrated is one of my highlights of the season
Gillingham – Emphatic performance early on in the season with a flurry of goals which buy us on good stead for the rest of the season
Bristol Rovers – Both away days were great but the league game which saw a beautiful free kick by McGeady just pips the cup game for me
Good choices, folks. I enjoyed all of those. Gillingham was a good one – i really thought we were going to romp the league after that one, and Doncaster Rovers showed our resilience and what a fine goalkeeper we had signed.
The less said about Fleetwood Town and Southend United the better…….
